Need some advice - trunnion caps/ball size
« on: July 08, 2006, 08:32:57 AM »
I am working on a small cannon.  The tube is the R-2 from SBR and I am attempting to make a field carriage for it.  It will be 'in-the-style' of the split trail revelutionary war carriage, but not faithfully detailed.  Do you guys have any suggestions for suppliers of trunnion caps?  The trunnions should end up about 3/4" in diameter (if I can stop filing on them).  I have no experience working metal and will need to buy them from someone.  Question two is about the ball size.  The bore size is .75 and I can buy balls that are either .710 or .735 - does it really make a difference?  I have seen the windage formula on the board before but can't locate the posts and don't know if the .735 is really safe.  Anyway, thanks for any help you can give a new guy.

.735" should be fine.  If you can load them through a fouled bore, there would be zero problem.  If not, you will have to clean after each shot so you can load the next one.

DO NOT hammer the ball down the bore under any circumstances.

You should be able to get caps from Powder Keg or one of the other sponsors of this board.  Ask them directly.

THe rule of thumb is windage should be one 40th of the bore diameter or in the the case of a .750  bore 0.01875.  So ball diameter would be 0.73125.  As George says the 0.735 balls should be just fine...

Be sure and post pictures.

I can build a pattern and cast some caps that size for you. I just need a couple weeks. Also I just bought a .710 ball mold to cast balls for my Gonnes. They should work fine. PM me if you are interested in any.
