9.3x62 CZ 550FS for Black Bear
« on: March 21, 2006, 06:01:15 AM »
Going with a friend on a spring black bear hunt in Manitoba.  I have a 20" barrel CZ 9.3x62 with iron sights.  I have a question about ammo.  I have some Privi Partisan with a 286 round nose conventional bullet.  Will this work?  Should I consider something else?  The stands are with in 25 yards of the bear.  I don't want to get to techie on such close range.  Also I thought iron sight should work just fine.  Comments?  This will be my first bear hunt.   Thanks  Buckfever

Guys in my area take bear with a heckuva lot less firepower than you are mustering. They rely on 30-30's and 35 Remingtons. These are typically 170 grain or 200 grain soft lead bullets.

The cannon you've got  there sounds like it should do the trick on anything up to Cape Buffalo.

I'm sure those will work just fine for your bear hunt.  One thing worth thinking about when bear hunting over bait is that it is usually fairly dark when they come in and a black front sight against a black animal in the near dark can be fairly hard to aim accurately.  YOu will probably still be just fine but worth considering.  A low power fixed or variable would be justr about perfect.  If not then a little white out dot on the front sight can really help a lot.  I have a gold bead on my open sights and its easier to site against a black target than a black bead.

The Cz I have has a white colored bead but I may get it replaced with a more reflective bead.  I was glad to see you reply being that you have experience with the caliber.  Do you know anything about  Privi Partisan ammo?  Any reccomendations if you don't think the conventional bullet is adequate?    Thanks  Buckfever

AT the modest velosities of the 9.3 I imagine that any conventional bullet will be perfectly adequate.  Black bear are generally not all that heavily constructed.  I don't have any experience with the bullet that you are talking about but wouldn't worry too much.  I have pretty much settled on the 286gr partition because of the possibility of running in to a brown and use on moose.  I have used the 270gr speer but find it a little on the soft side for anything bigger than deer or black bear.  The new barnes TSX bullets look good and I look forward to trying them out in the future.  Honestly though I don't think I could do any better for my uses than the nosler at 2400fps.  I have never shot any factory ammo out of my 9.3.

That CZ should be just about perfect for close quarters action on baited bears and should swing well inside of a blind.  Good luck.

I'd say you have not only a fine black bear gun, but a grizzly anf/or polar bear rifle also.

For bleack bear I'd use my trusty 358 Winchester and download a 200 or maybe a 225 grain bullet to about 2,400 fps.  So your 9.3x62mm which should throw the 286 grain round nose at around 2,200 should be plenty.

You hit the nail on the head when you say the black bear is mean and nasty when riled. I had a guiding and outfitting set up in Northern New Mexico for a number of years and have witnessed some hair raising episodes. They don't have to be big to raise a bunch of stink. I have witnessed men, horses, dogs scattering like flies off a carcass when a bear comes out of the tree. We had a bear kill an old woman year before last and was chowing down on her when some of the family happened to come by. This all happened in the northen part of New Mexico at a place called tres piedras.  ::)...........Joe.............and yes the9.3X 62 will get the job done if you do your part
