Yep,  He was quite the character.  My daughter loves to watch the Croc Hunter TV program on Discovery.  He did a lot for wildlife conservation and for Australian tourism.  He will be missed.

I agree this is tragic but did anyone else see this coming? It's like that guy grizzlyman with the bears. I guess we should all be lucky enough to go doing something we love.

Having stepped on rays myself, no I didn't expect anyone to get killed by a ray.  He respected the animals he worked with.  The Grizzly Man on the other hand was a moron that didn't respect the animals that ate him.

I don't mean to sound like I am making light of the situation. He did a lot of wonderful things. I just don't know how long you can jump off a boat onto poisonous snakes without getting bit.

And yes the grizzlyman was obviously missing a few screws.

It is extremely rare for someone to be killed by a stingray.  I believe there are only 4 recorded fatalities by rays including Erwin. The last one was back in 1945 or something.  There are some places where tourist pay to swim with stingrays.   I think Ol' Steve just used up all his luck whist playing with the really nasty critters.  It was such a freak accident, akin to a professional skydiver falling off a kitchen chair and breaking his neck while changing a light bulb in a ceiling fixture. Go figure.
