Difference between a sporting clays and a trap shotgun?
« on: June 02, 2007, 05:47:21 PM »
Hello

The reason for this question is I just recently got hooked on sporting clays and the only shotgun that I have that will stand the rigors of this sport is a Remington 3200 Trap Deluxe in 12 gauge fixed chokes. I have shot this several times and each time I did a little better but it seemed to be taking me longer then I would like. So I borrowed a club gun, Bretta 686 Onyx  and like magic I went from the 40’s to the 50’s and the last time out I shot a 69. I take this improvement to be the sporting clays gun. So what will it take to get my 3200 to shoot like a sporting clays gun a stock modification?

I been looking at clays guns but I really do not want to spend a lot. The club is selling off their loaners for 1200 I believe. Any help will be welcomed.

Thanks

Have a great day

Joe

You might or might not need the stock modified. I seem to shoot my Browning XT trap gun about as well on skeet as a skeet gun but I'm using cylinder bore choke tubes in it. I think the single best change you could make to it would be to have the barrels modified for choke tubes so you can tailor the choke to the shot presentation or at least open the barrels up to Skeet or IC and Modified. Of course if you plan to continue to use it for trap you'd not want to do the latter.

That price of $1200 is entirely reasonable for a decent condition used Beretta O/U shotgun. Since you shot it well why not look into buying one of them.

Hello

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about having chokes put in but 600 is what a friend payed to have his Kreighof done, and he did not have Kreighof do it. I know what I would like but, the more I think about it the better that Beretta seems.

Thanks again

Have a great day

GRAYBEARD has the best idea , but if you just want to shoot the 3200 some try spredar loads ! may work to see if you do better with a more open pattern !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Hello

Man I must be getting old, forgot to up date my  thread. So hear goes. On fathers day after shooting a round of sporting clays with son we went to Cabelas. I do not think I even left the the firearms section on this day. I was looking at Winchester 101s in their gun room along with other  O/Us. I ended up getting a Beretta 686 sporting W/32" tubes and Optima chokes. I really like this shotgun. light weight and even when using Remington Nitros recoil is not a problem. I have well over a thousand rounds through it since I got it. I bought two extra choke tubes for it a light mod and another IC. No i do not change chokes at every station I am just learning, I am using Skeet on the lower and IC in the upper. Last time out I shot a 70/100, this is a personal best. I plan on shooting through the winter, but I shall see how I feel. My only regret is waiting way to long to try this game.

Thanks for the replies.

Have a great day
