IT'S HERE!!!!
« on: August 03, 2006, 03:06:46 PM »
My dealer informed me today that my FA 83 was here, OH JOY!!  However, this IS the People's Republic of Calexico and a ten day waiting period must be adhered to just in case I go wildly biserk in a day or two and use my "criminal's gun of choice" to shoot up the local post office.   ::)  I don't think my dealer has handled an FA gun before and he is just absolutely ga-ga over it.

Yeah, Dusty, we all know that a single action that kicks like a mule, costs an arm and a leg, and takes months to get to you is obviously what a hot-headed nut with mass murder on his mind would order.  I think the wait will be worth it.  I got mine about 4 years ago, and they said 6 months!  Well as I recall, it was about 3 days short of 6 months.  I sometimes think they really have them, but keep them awhile to make us suffer.

Hang on Dusty! Don't bust a gut! Will your dealer let you go fondle it?

A ten day waiting period? What do they think that will acomplish? I don't see criminals going through back ground checks and waiting periods. If they would put their resources into stopping drugs, I think that would stop alot more crimes from being committed than 10 day waiting periods. Have fun with your new gun (someday) !

If they would WISE UP and legalize drugs crime would drop.  However, this is the PRC and any number of excuses can be created to continue the practice.  >:(

Well done. Enjoy the new FA. I only possess one (and own two). I love them! Marvel of modern engineering the FA.

I don't want take away from your excitement, or turn this into a political chat... I think there's a forum for that too! But it's been raised here so.... gun control is the way of the world. We really need to keep the kids liking guns and shooting.

Here in South Africa we've had a form of licensing since my dad can remember. Currently we have pretty oppressive gun ownership laws, limits on numbers, restictions and limited licence periods. Requirements that you particpipate in sports and hunting and are a member of various organistations that certify that you participate as a dedicated party in pursuit of your interest. Etc. etc. It always starts off small and creeps up on you.

I'll be lucky to have my new FA in a year (if at all)!

Just wanted to remind everyone that keeping the youth in shooting sports is in our interest. Already in South Africa that's changed with schools discouraging kids from having involvement in hunting and / or shooting.

I'm buying the gun from a guy at work who is a partner in a gun store.  He was not at work yesterday and when I talked to him today he thought tomorrow was the correct date.  SO, tomorrow should be the day.  I gave  him a nice fat check for the balance due today and I'm sure that'll keep the matter on his mind.  I've got a TON of stuff loaded up to shoot so tomorrow after work I'll head for the range and give it a go.  You'll either get a glowing report or a really big sob story but I'm betting on the former.

WL44, you are SO CORRECT to encourage people to get their kids and grandkids involved.  I've got a 12 year old grand daughter that really likes my Ruger Vaquero .45 Colt (I've willed it to her!) and a 16 year old boy likes to shoot as well.  Then there's the 3 yr. old who shoots my Ruger .22 Bearcat and tells his mom that I'm a cowboy, "Cuz Papas gots guns"!!  There's a 2 yr. old that'll get into the act too.  I was raised by a "father" who had guns in the house for the entire 18 years I lived with him and I got to shoot them exactly ONCE in that period of almost two decades.  Never having had any kids of my own there was not much opportunity to introduce kids to guns but my second wife has a PASSEL of grandkids and some of them are showing a lot of interest.

WL44, it saddens me to learn of the repressiveness in S. Africa. I would imagine a lot of us over here like to think of South Africa as a more romantic place, similar to our Old West, but with larger, more exotic and dangerous game. You paint a picture of liberal gun grabbers around every tree & bush.
I quess I'm living in the past and just hope my grandkids aren't faced with what you are going through.
Any of you gun people out there who don't belong to the NRA should be ashamed.

My apologies again for directing any focus away from Dusty's joyous receipt of his new FA!

Thanks for not stomping on me for doing it - really appreciated. I kinda needed to say something.

Dusty, we are now waiting for pics and a range report  ;D.

OK WL44, here's the range report.  With the 45 Colt cylinder in place I started off with 18.0 gr. of AA9 under a 240 gr. JHP and came up with 1145 fps.  The move to 19 gr. gave me 1235 fps and 21 gr. produced 1410 fps.  But then the jump to 22 gr. of powder produce only an additional 35 fps.  I finished up with 23 gr. for 1499 fps.  I'm think'n that 19 gr. load might just become my standard load for the 45 Colt side of the equation.  I was losing my sunlight but I did get a trio of reads for the 454 Casull.  Using 24.3 gr. of 2400 under a 300 gr. SRA JSP garnered 1535 fps, the exact same result with 28.5 gr of H110.  But I'm here to tell ya brothers and sisters, that 2400 load was a LOT nicer to shoot than the H110 which produced a very sharp recoil.  Another thing about that H110 load, that was the STARTING load and I'll just 'fess up right now and tell yas I'll most likely NEVER use any more H110 than that in this gun!   I finished up with 20 gr. of AA9 for 1285 fps.  As for accuracy, well...............uh...............er, doggoned it I was spray'n bullets all OVER the place!  :-[  At 25 yards my best group using the 45 Colt was about 2.5 to 3.0 inches.  Also, my POA was the top edge of the target and my POI was about six inches below!  So, I'm gonna hafta put in some practice time and work on my sight picture for awhile and see if that helps.  If not, I'll start filing down the front sight (hate to do that on an FA gun but a guy has gotta do what he's gotta do). Hopefully I'll get some pictures taken in a day or two and figure out how to post'm.

Dusty,

Always a problem with the fixed sights!

I personally find with any of the heavier recoilers is that shooting offhand and off a bench / bags etc. can change POI quite a bit, becuase of how the gun recoils and the grip rolls (or doesn't) in your hand. As soon as you settle on a load you'll want to change it too and need to change the sights again  ;D.

You may find once you've settled on the load you like that the file stays in the tool box!

I've never looked over the FA fixed sights, but without an undercut front blade and in poor light I think those groups aren't too bad at all.

I'm about to head to the range again with BOTH FA revolvers.  My 7 1/2" field grade is ported and  has a Leupold 2X scope.  This'll be fun!

The new FA with the 45 Colt cylinder in place shoots a 240 gr. LSWC (10.2 gr. AA5) like spreading soft butter over my morning toast, 960 fps.  I also shot a couple of other loads thru my 7 1/2" Field Grade gun to see how it compared to my new 6" toy.  To my great surprise the loads I tested were SLOWER from the longer barrel!!  The 300 gr. SRA JSP over 24.3 gr. of 2400 left the 6" barrel at 1535 fps and from the 7" barrel at 1475 fps.  That same bullet over 28.5 gr of H110 also launched at 1535 fps from the 6" barrel but managed only 1500 fps from the 7" tube.  My only conclusion about this is the the 7" barrel is ported and that's where the loss occurs but I just can't say for sure.  Anyway, I'm having fun.  My 14 yr. old grand daughter wants to shoot it so I'll have get some of those light 45 Colt loads made up tomorrow.  I almost forgot, as I was thinking about packing up and heading home I spied a box of 345 gr. WLN hard cast loads using 18.0 gr. of AA9 that I'd concocted for the longer barreled gun and decided to run a few thru the new gun since all my other loads were shooting about 6" high.  Well, to my great surprise that load shot closer to my POA than any other in the box.  Maybe I'm on to something here.  My only gripe about this $2375 toy is that the ejector rod is not retracting as it should.  Maybe with a bit of wear and proper lube that'll clear up.  More later.

The ejector rod may be partially unscrewed from its handle tab.  Carefully unscrewing the ejector rod housing from the barrel while constraining the housing will allow you to inspect it after removal.
