Having misfires on Handi 30-30
« on: July 13, 2006, 03:59:06 PM »
Useing handloads CCI 250 primers I have had several fail to fire. Even when I would re-cock and fire again several times so I assume ita the primers. Any recommendations on a better primer to use or to increase the force of the hammer-firing pin?

The 250's are large rifle magnum primers, aren't they? How bout trying the 200 large rifle primers? If the search feature was working you could search for Fred M's post about fixing a light strike problem, maybe he'll post the fix for ya.

It was shooting the Fusion 175 grain factory loads without a hitch & grouping 3 shots in 2.5". The handloads are about 3 months old and they group about same although they are 150 gr.BTSP.

The 170gr Fusion ammo uses a #210 primer according to their online catalog if that helps any. Weak hammer springs have been reported a problem occasionally, you can order replacements from H&R, Brownell's and Numrich, use Perklo's instructions for trigger R&R on how to replace it.

Try switching primers...I primaraly use Remiington 9-1/2 all the time now for just about all of my reloading..and always had good luck with them for the 30-30..

You can cry me a river... but...build me a bridge and then get over it...

I've used CCI 200 and Winchester Large Rifle primers without ever having a miss fire ... except the one time i accidently seated a bullet without powder in the case! I did have a couple of miss fires with my Marlin models 30 and 36 because I hadn't seated the primer down properly but put them in my 30-30 Handi and they both fired. I've used Varget, BL-C2, H4895 and IMR 3031 powders in my 30-30 loads with 150 and 165 grain spire points but never use magnum primers on them. I have seen load data that does use CCI 250 primers with some powders but never had a reason to try them.

Check your firing pin protrusion. It should be 0.045 inches. Primers should be flush not set in. When I used cases that had primer pockets that left the primers flush my misfire problems went away. So don't remove brass when you clean out the primer pockets so that the primers will not be set in.

Thanks everyone. I did the trigger job on one of my Handi's (.223) but not on the 30-30 yet. I'll order a new hammer spring from NEF and when it gets here will replace the other & do the trigger job on it.

What Mac11700 said. The Remington 9.5 is a primer that won't let you down. If you can clean out the inards with spray lube wd 1040 or rem. oil always seem to help also. Use compress air to flush out excess. Works for me!
if its worth doing, finish it!

With a proper firing pin projection of 42-45 thou there are only two reasons for a miss fire on primers. One, and this is the major one one on a Handi is the CCI primer large or small. Two, a weak firing pin spring.

Use only Rem 9-1/2, Win LRP, or Federal Large or small primers. CCI primers wont even fire in my BR actions.

Perhaps I should elaborate some more. The CCI primers are the hardest primers to ignite and the Handi hammers are on the slow side delivering a soft blow even with an up to snuff spring.

Lighten the hammer will greatly improve ignitition. See the two methods of reducing hammer weight in the FAQ.
