Finish Work on Mini Parrott (pics)
« on: April 24, 2006, 10:40:44 AM »
Have finally completed most of the finish work on my Mini Parrott. Have the spring loaded cannon lock, the rear sight, and the front sight all mounted. Still don't have a proper carriage. The rear sight was the toughtest. I wanted it adjustable for windage and elevation. Started with the latter and slide from an old Russian rifle sight. The base with windage adjustment was made from odds and ends from around the shop. Made three before I got one to work right. The cannon lock has a saftey pin that must be removed before it can fire. It works well, but the #11 caps are somewhat lacking in power, will probably convert to something else. Boomer

I was putting nails into concrete with my remington .22 PAT nailgun this weekend. Because of the enclosed design of a PAT nailgun, I havn't a clue how much fire one of those nailgun blank cartridges put out. I can't imaging that it doesn't do anything. They come in different power grades, and are way more available than blank .22 cartridges.

I guess this weekend I can stick one of each grade #1 thru #4 in a .22 revolver and see how much fire they put out. I'll give you my subjective opinion when I do it. It would seem that maybe a custom nipple and some minor modification to the hammer to strike the rim might be all that is needed to set one of those things off.

I think the cartridges are a little too big for a .22 LR chamber; .25 cal instead of .22 cal.

There are .22cal power nailers out there, and I have used them in a gun. They do have a little bit of cardboard in them, more powerful than blanks (I think). Look like a .22 crimped shotshell, with no shot. MIKE

The 22 cal blanks works fine in 22 cal firearms. The most powerful ones seem to have some recoil to them.
Even the weakest ones have too much power to properly launch 15mm bird bombs from the flash hider on my 10-22, they tend to destroy them.
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

Some of the in-line BP rifles use 209 shotgun primers for ignition.  Have you given that a thought?

MaxSmoke, my vent liner is threaded 1/4" x 28.  If I can find a 209 nipple in that thread, that is the way I will go. Have sent an email to Midway asking about their 209 nipple thread, but so far, no answer.  Boomer

Don't know why the picture of the rear sight was dropped from my first post, but here it is again.  Boomer

I fired a couple of #2 powder loads in a ruger revolver a few minutes ago. I didn't have hearing protectors at the tme, so did not go any further. The second one I fired at a sheet of paper a foot away. It ripped the paper in half.

A #1 load may be more appropriate if it isn't too powerful. It occured to me I should have stuck an inch or so of cannon fuse in the barrel when I fired it so see if it had enough spark to lite the fuse.

We use OLD Remmington tool blanks to fire our cannon all the time. (someone had to dispose of that haz mat.) Flame travels aprox. 2.5' and has no problems set off the charge.

there are some elsewhere on the net so lets see if this will work.

A most impressive series of pictures.  I am at a complete loss on one point though.... what is the purpose of the rectangular thing on the right side of the breech?  Also, how does that breechloading mechanism work?

if I grasp the picture, the .22 power load fits right into the vent hole and the hammer is pretty much a big hammer that wacks the case?

Was there anything special about the hammer to hit the case rim in particular, or does it just womp the whole thing real hard?

Seems simple

sorry I dont have a better picture. The case closely fits the hole. The rim of the case sits on the barrel. the hammer only strikes the rear edge of the case. The bore size is .5 smaller than the hole for the breechblock that you see here.
Originally these were often made of brass and had a steel insert for a striker.

evildog,

The thing on the right side of the block is just a support for the crossblocks which go through the breech block. The breech block ,laying on the trail with the wood handle; goes into the breech of the gun. On the front of the breechblock there are 2 gaschecks which are expanded when force from the charge move the cone that the gaschecks ride on to the rear.  like piston rings riding in a cone shaped cylinder.

This picture shows breech locked up ready to fire.

I had started to make a web page with info on our building of this gun and a link to a page about the history. I still haven't perfected it but you can look here. Read it to allow time for the pictures to load. (yep, I dont know how to downsize them.)

YouÂ’re in luck, the Thompson Contender uses that thread.  You can get a nipple for either 209s or musket caps

Finally got the Mini Parrott converted from #11 caps to 209 primers. Wow are those things powerful!!! Took it out to the range Saturday morning. All the modifications worked great. Accuracy is greatly improved. With 250 gr of 2f Goex and the wood sabot, it shot very well. Only shooting at 50 yards, but kept all shoots on the target, that is a big improvement for me. Will try to post some pics.  Boomer

Powder keg, had several "failure to fire" problems with the #11s. Had drilled out the #11 nipple so I could try foil powder bags. May have drilled out to much.  With the 209s, I have a much larger hole into the chamber, so I can get a decent size hole in the powder bag. As an added benifit, the 209s self eject. Drilled a small hole in the face of the hammer, used lock tight to secure a "bb" in for a firing pin. Works great so far. Still haven't used the foil powder bags, can't find a 1" wurm.   Boomer

A bb for the pin, That sounds like a good idea. For a wurm I have been using a coat hanger with a hook bent on the one end and a crank bent into the other end :D. Stick it down the barrel and crank the hook till it grabs the foil then pull it out. It will have to work till I get time to build some propper ones.

I was wondering what you are using for an elevation mechanism I like the looks of it and the gun.

Cannon Man, inside the black steel box, resides a small screw jack form a Ford pickup. Added a short shaft, and a 5" handwheel. The jack has worked out real well, and the price was right. Boomer

Hey boomer thanks for the info, I get some of the greatest ideas from this site. I have been thinking about turning out a mini parrot gun and will keep your elevation mech idea in mind.

Little Guy, hope this picture is clear enough. The #11 is on the left. Couldn't get a bp can in the picture, so I put in a dime for size. Boomer
