New BBL, .460 or .500??

My brother is definitely going to have a new bbl drilled out to either the .460 or the .500 pistol calibers... Which of those two would you prefer?

I have told him I'd go with the .460 mostly because of the superior ballistics, but he is leaning towards the .500. Who's right? :?:

It would depend what the intent of the guns use is. Longer range hunting the 460. Closer hunting out to 100 yards for nasty critters,hogs and bear I would go with the 500. personal I like the 500 MAG. :D

I would go with the .460, but i am looking for a companion arm for my Blackhawks and my Trapper carbine, all in .45 Colt; a heavy hitter that can use the same bullets. I think Lyman's .451 Volunteer (450 gr) would be a fine "heavy" for the cartrige, though it does take up some space.

 I am waiting for this to become an "over-the-counter" offering: i think if i were to pay for a custom barrel, it would be tempting to rebarrel my Ruger #3 because it's straight stock better matches my Trapper.

There is no wrong answer but each has a different niche.  The .460 treads in to .45-70 territory and does lighter bullets better.  The .500 is the heavy hitter of the pair and lets you fling lead in the 600 grain range.  I have the .500 and got it before the .460 existed and besides I have a .405 Win barrel.

So who is making the .460 in a rifle/carbine barrel? I just looked at the custom shop page, and they don't have it in their caliber list yet. I think a 460 Katahdin barrel would be sweet!

i spoke to JD at ssk a while back about a .50 cal. barrel. the only catch, is that you have to use open sights on a fifty barrel. he wont drill scope mounting holes in a barrel that thin.
   i like scopes myself! so i went with a .45 colt barrel. the pigs dont know the difference!!!!!

To get the high velosities that they claim with the .460`s you have to shoot 200gn. bullets, and you can get nearly as high with the 500 with 275 gn. bullets. Sure you can shoot .454`s in the .460, but I have acouple .454`s. If I could have only one it would be the .500.

Who makes the bbl? Fox Ridge said they'd make the .460.

Bro still hasn't commited to the buy, yet. He has so many other rifles that he's really not in a hurry and I think he will opt for the .460 over the .500. Then, I'll shoot his gun a few times and IF I really like it.. Christmas is coming, right? 8)

I bought a 460 S&W Mag. Custom Shop barrel.  I'm glad I got the muzzel tamer.  I wish I had gotten the 3 ring scope base rather than the 2 ring version.  I first had a Bushnell Trophy variable scope on mine tightened as much as it could be tightened.  The scope moved in spite of my efforts and the tube was actually dented.  I now have a Leupold scope on it and mounted so that the tower contacts the ring so it can't move...so far so good.

The 500 S&W Mag. is also a fantastic round but for my purposes (I went for higher velocity and longer range) the 460 seemed to be the best choice.

T/C is now making Katahdin 20 inch ss barrels in the 45-70, 460 S&W, and the 500 S&W calibers.

I've got a custom (VV or Bullberry) 500 S&W barrel in carbine length.  It's about the worst recoiling caliber I own (and I own a lot of guns).  After having a muzzlebrake installed, it's still murder on my shoulder.  And I've only loaded up the lightweight 275 grain barnes bullets.

Go with a 460.  That way you can download it to 454 Casull if necessary.

 personally i would ask myself what will this pistols main use be#1are you hunting brown bears in alaska or#2 or  will you use it for smaller game such as deer or pigs,and will you be shooting often.if you answered yes to #1 if you answered yes to #1 then i would lean toward the 1\2 inch bullet and all that power and energy,if you chose #2 then go with the 460,flatter trajectory for a longer effective range.and the 460will be more to your liking,and i really like the pointed bullets.keep us posted just my opinion...jim

ps i shoot a 480 ruger and it is easier to shoot\control than  my 44 mag
