Ordered a new .223 Super 14 today!
« on: July 15, 2006, 06:38:19 AM »
This is my first new barrel in many years. I had previously owned a 14" .223 in the 90's and ended up trading it. I just hope this new one shoots at least as well as my old one did. Should be here within a week.

Any others here like the 14" .223? What are some loads that are accurate in yours? My old barrel did really well with H322 and 52 grain match Sierras and Bergers.

TCS....I just sold a 14" Super on E_____Y (tried to sell it here buy no takers). It was an excellent shooter, but since I bot my 223 rifle...the rifle just shoots sooooo darn good I can't put it down. The 14" just sat in the safe, so I sold it. Anyway...It loved the Hornady 55gr over WIN 748. I can't remember the grains, but it was just under the recommended max. Great groups at 100 yards and good groups at 200 yards.

Have fun with your new 14"!!!

Davemuzz , what kind of .223 rifle did you get? I also have a .223 rifle , a 700LTR with 20" barrel. I was going to get a 26" barrel 700VLS or Savage but went the other direction this time!

Speaking of 748 I had really good results using it along with 52 grain Bergers with the VLS I once owned and traded away :-[

My Super 16 .223 shoots well with the 40 gr Vmax. Went with the lighter bullets so I could get a bit more velocity out of the shorter tube. I'm messing around with the Vihtavuori powder at the moment, used 25 gr of N133 and had nice goups at 100.

Not sure I will stay with it though...kinda expensive and you have to buy it in 2lb canisters.....going to try H322 next I think, with the 40g. Vmax and see if that shoots ok as well.

I have had best luck with Varget and 45-50 gr bullets. I use a load a little under Hodgden's max. This has given me 3/8" groups. I also find that the Win white box 45 gr shoots pretty well - 5/8". I sight at 100 yds.

Good luck and enjoy.

I have the super 14 in .223 and a 10x burris scope and love it.  Not too fond of the 10x scope though.  It is hard to stabilize and acquire a sight picture.

I have only shot factory so far, but the results are amazing.  I was shooting Winchester factory the other day and ran them across the chronograph.  The average was 3174 fps for a five shot group.  It grouped well under .75" @ 100 yards.

I can't wait to reload and really have some fun.   ;)

The barrel arrived yesterday! Really a nicely finished barrel. It is now on my TC frame and has a 7X Burris IER scope. I am going to load up some 52 , 53 grain Sierra match bullets since they used to shoot so well in my old Super 14". Hopefully I will be able to test it out this weekend!
