'95GS Scope - What Do You Think?
« on: April 10, 2006, 09:36:06 AM »
Well, I've been reading up on the numerous scopes offered and favored by the '95GS owners. All I've accomplished is to confuse myself.

We've loaded the 45-70s from 'mild to wild' and really enjoy shooting all the flavors in the GS and our Cowboy!

Now it's time to scope it - my old eyes aren't what they used to be - and I'd like a few questions answered.

I have a quick detach scope mount on my Ruger MkIII Hunter - anything like that for the GS?

Also, I'd like a high mount that would allow me to use the iron sights OR could I use a Ghost Sight arrangement UNDER the scope? I'm not clear
on that.

The barrel is NOT ported but will be using some occasional stiff loads - how do scopes hold up under that kind of pounding on a big bore like the GS?

I'd appreciate any other pointers/suggestions that you may have.

Thanks, in advance.

I was in basically the same predicament as you a couple of years ago with my new 1895GS.

I mounted 2 piece Warne nickle bases with a Leupold Compact 2-7X scope with Leupold quick detatchable rings.

When I don't want the scope on I quickly remove it and install an XS Sights Ghost Ring Backup sight system on the rear base. I did not remove the standard rear sight just folded it down out of the way.

I had to change the front sight as well with XS Sights plastic test post sight then phone them with the correct high measurement and they sent me the correct front post.

I have fired at least 500 hundred top velocity 300gr to 550gr loads without any problems with the scope or ghost ring sights.

I currently have a leupold FX 2.5 x 28mm mounted on a XS lever scount mount with the XS ghost sights as well. The Leopold has quick release rings. The set up has held up under heavy loads and it has made my Marlin 1895G my favorite gun. The Leopold scope is known to be as tougyh as any for large bore ammo. Goodl luck.
