Coupla years ago I got a new Marlin 1894H in 44Mag from Big 5.  Anyone know what the significance of the "H" is?

The H is for hardwood. That is due to the inexpensive stocks they put on regular actions for Big 5.
BTW you can actually dandy up the stock somewhat by stripping to bare wood and then doing it in a more rubbed stain. That spray on brown isn't all that attractive, but still it is functional. Good rifle none the less and priced right. They are now up to about $349.

Thank you!  Exactly the info I needed... ;D

Was wondering about the stock as well since it certainly ain't premium walnut and didn't come with the little "target" on the bottom.  The grain isn't exactly spectactlar, but from what you told me, it'll finish up nicely.

Thanks again...

I have one of these rifles form BIG 5 also, with the hardwood furniture.  I checked with the parts department at Marlin and replacement stocks & forends are available in walnut if you should deside to upgrade later, which I may just do.  If memory serves me, the set ran about $140.
