New Kimber
« on: June 18, 2006, 05:11:28 PM »
I have a stainless Kimber in 45 ACP w/ external extractor, and I've heard complaints about extractor function or failure.  This was going to be my carry gun but I am more than a little worried about FTE!  Any custom guys make this part for Kimbers?

try it like it is. Ive got a kimber commander with an ex extractor and it has about 5000 trouble free rounds through it. Contrary to what you hear there not a bad extractor if adj correctly. Even an internal extractor if not tensioned properly will work poorly.

Good Luck.   I understand Kimber went through several design changes trying to prefect the external extractor.   In a quick scan of their website, it looked to me as though they have dropped the external extractor on their new guns.  (certianly on a number of guns that used to have them)

A couple of guys at our club have guns with the external extractor and they have all gone back to Kimber for repair.  One of them has gone back twice.  It isn't that it doesn't extract, the problem is that the extractor falls apart an flys across the room.

The repaired guns seem to be functioning OK now...........???????

I guess I have just been lucky.   I have three Kimber and three Colt 1911s, and have never had a problem with any of them.  All of the Kimbers have internal extractors, two are Series I guns, and one is a Series II.  Two of the Colts are Series 70s, and the other is a GI model from WWI.   You can never have too many 45s.   But Lloyd already knows that.

Kimber changed back to their internal extractors . This and Wilson mags. should remedy most problems with Kimbers. I know cause I just got a new Kimber Eclipse. :D

I have a Kimber waiting for pick up. it is interesting to note that the series 2 gun not only has the internal extractor, but they advertise the firing pin block as enlarged to stableize the extractor.

well,  i dont know why they would fiddle with the extractor anyway.   if it isnt broke, dont fix it.   it isnt like the 1911 design is unproven.   someone always has to try to mess with perfection.   lol.
