Trapping Tip ( Using Rocks for drags way back in country)
« on: June 13, 2006, 12:53:35 AM »
Alot of places i trap i have to walk way back in and dont carry alot with me.  In mink trapping and could be used for canines also in place of iron hook drags i carry heavy soft  copper wire.  When you find right piece of rock for intended species  wrap copper wire around  in such a way that when you put on your trapping wire it pulls copper wire tite around rock with the pulling pressure so it doesnt slip off.  Using copper wire the drag will  be there  for ages without replacing regular iron wire that would rust away. With mink drags the wired rocks can even be left in the water till next year without worry about iron  wire rusting away or weakening.  You can find scraps of  number  8 thru 10 wire at electrical shops that are long enough to use for around trapping rocks... You can  burn off the insulating wire  in a campfire and wire is good to go....

Asa hauling all that weight out and hauling double that weight in furs on the way back out has kept your perspective in the right lane!

Wacky your right my fur is just a throw from the rock it is attached to in the trap......

OK RdFx, i'll forgive 'ya!   Back in the bounty era we were required to present the whole body of coyotes, bobcat and fox to the conservation dept. for the bounty.  Sometimes I would have three animals in the packbasket and one over each shoulder to haul out for a mile or two. This was along with the trapping gear! Don't think I would get to far these days, LOL! Ace

I use rocks.   I carry a bricklayer's hammer to put a notch on either side of the rock to help hold the wire in place.  If you try this, make sure you have safety glasses to protect the old peepers.

Trapped S.Indiana for several years and regularly used to "wire off" footholds to cedars. Used 3/32 cable and aluminium ferrule smashed shut...no not the best but some of those aluminum tieoffs are still there. Ground was limestone couldn't stake and didn't want to drag off...too many  non-collared "feral" dogs around...didn't want one to go home carrying my trap with him.
I could see a guy chipping some rocks with a hammer and cabling some rocks up for MANY season of use...lol
