358 JDJ
« on: July 08, 2006, 12:52:40 PM »
I was just at a local gun show today and found one of these.  It is a necked down .444 Marlin. It is built on an older contender frame. Is this too much for a contender frame, should it be on an encore? Just wondering, I was interested in, but I am not really sure ::)

Too much for the Contender??? Nope, that is what JD designed it for.... and its been around longer than the Encore has. Sold mine a year or so ago but it is a dandy, if the price is right grab it and have fun with it!

He is asking $1,150 That includes T/C lighted reticle scope, 300 rounds loaded w/180 grain bullets, full set of dies, and a shoulder holster.  He is willing to deal, I haven't made an offer yet.  I wasn't sure what would be a fair price.  He is the original owner and claims to have shot 200 rounds throught it.  It looks to be in very good shape.

Used Contender frame $200-225
New 358JDJ $354
New T/C lighted scope $230
New RCBS Dies $75

That's $859-884 so far but mostly including new equipment.

What kind of scope mount system? That could add $40-75
Holster is up to you. I'm a lefty so I typically write those off in deals I come across.
I pretty much wouldn't shoot anyones' handloads I did not know very well...

That sounds like quite a bit more than I would pay for a used Contender.  For that money I'd get a nice stainless steel Encore brand new with money to spare!

If the included cartridges are factory loadings, that would add something to the value.  If they are someone elses handloads, do you really want to shoot them???

Good point.  I am not sure if they are factory or not.  The scope mounting is T'SOB full vent rib on a shilen bull barrel.

Travis will have to find out for sure but it would seem highly unlikely that someone with dies in hand would purchase that kind of quantity of factory ammo...

I think you have a dilemma in that the seller is going to have a hard time writing off the investment in that ammo while as a buyer I probably would pull the bullets, start over and only assign a token value for the components themselves.

Seems to me about $750 should be tops for the whole setup.

Be careful what you ask for.  I have a 358 jdj in a 14" Contender.  It is accurate and a REAL thumper, but the recoil borders on brutal.  Maybe with 180 grains it will be all right.  I shoot 225 grain ballistic tips and the dang thing flat jumps when you touch it off.  Like I said, it is accurate, but you flat have to concentrate on the trigger pull to make it so.  Hunting with only a shot or two is OK.  At the range, after about 10 shots, my nerves are done and it is time to put the 358 jdj away for awhile.

Thanks to everyone for your input, I just ran across this at the gun show and it piqued my interest.  I am looking for something too hunt with.  I don't think I am going to get this one.  I am willing to spend that much money or more, but it has to be worth the money.  I like what I have read about SSK, but don't think this is worth what he is asking for a used gun.  Thanks again to everyone.  The 460 S&W in a T/C has also got my eye.

I found out a few minutes ago that this gun from SSK set up the same way without bullets and a holster would be a little over $1,400.

Travis,

I don't know where you "found out" the setup less ammo and holster was worth $1400. I would suggest this:

  • Search this forum to determine the value of a clean old-style frame.
  • Go to forum sponsor SSK Industries to view the price list for barrels, scope mounts and dies.
  • Go to forum sponsor Ed's TCs to view the price list for scopes.

Let us know what you come up with. I don't think it will be $1400.

The ptice of $1,400 was the price JD quoted me for SSK to build this gun.  That would be everything the exact same as the one this guy is selling.  SSK did build his as well.  It seemed high ($1,400), but that is what they said it would cost.

Assuming (yeah, I know) that this a blued gun we are talking about.......a new SSK barrel would be at least $495 set up with the full lenght vent rib T'sob mount,  and if its stainless then add another $50 or so......if its SSK Krome, Mag-na-ported, or has an Arrestor brake that can easily drive the price of the barrel up to around $700....remember now, thats the cost for a new barrel and thats the cost for just the barrel.......add dies @ $68 for Hornady's,  more for RCBS, frame, scope, holster and yep, you could easily get to the $1400 figure for all new stuff.

Dont know if this will help you or not but I sold my 358JDJ barrel/dies about a year ago for $550 shipped...it was a stainless SSK, Shilen match grade blank, full lenght vent rib T'sob (also in stainless) and Mag-Na-Ported the dies were Hornady's and I threw in what brass I had formed for it.........heres a picture of it, it was a beauty....JD sells nice stuff.

cnTndr85,

thanks that does help.  The one i am looking at does have the arrestor muzzle brake.  I just don't know if that is exactly what I want or not.  How did yours shoot?  I think it would be great Elk gun.

Travis,  I have a rechambered TC hunter. It was a .35 Rem. and now a .358JDJ. It will shoot 2-1/2" at 200 yds. When you shoot a deer with Rem. 200 gr. round nose THEY GO DOWN! You'd like it.   Pat ;)

If you are not sure about the .358JDJ, why not get an Encore in .358 Win. I've got one and like it alot and mine will shoot into 1 1/4 inches at 100 yards, just a thought.

My 358jdj is a rechambered 35rem. It kicks so hard I had a vais brake installed.I use 180's or 200 grain bullets on deer. What the other guy said"when you hit a deer it goes DOWN" is true ! BUT you better hit them in the right spot.250 grainers hurt me too much to use.225's seem to be too hard for deer around these parts.

these were shot in a 35rem so think about another 2-300 fps from the JDJ case.

I too found a used SSK .358JDJ Bbl and scope for sale. I got it. I priced it out and this is what I found(on SSK site): $400 bbl, $150 muzzle break, $88 T'SOB scope mount, and about $180-200 for Bushnell scope. NO frame! it's at over $800 right there now add a $300+ frame and there you go and that's not adding the ammo(you will have 300rnds for a long time) and holster. Not the deal of the century but you'not getting ripped off by any means. It's all up to you.
