Bow and Gun lease for whitetail/hogs in SE Texas for 2006

I'm looking for an affordable Lease within a 1.5-2 hr drive of Northwest Houston/Tomball area. If anyone knows of one, please let me know. Thanks.

Yeah right!!!  

Just amazed of the prices of leases here in TX.  Anything less than $1500 is considered a bargain......UNLESS.....you are fortunate to get to know a landowner or if your landowner is unaware of lease values.  Saw a lease in the Dallas Moring News this weekend....1500acres Llano(dog-deer county) for $20,000 per year!!!!!!

I happen to have a lease for $650 a year(per person) and our neighbors pay $1750(per person).  We are in good with the landowner and family and he is very particular about his hunters.

If you luck into something truly affordable, let all of us know!!!  I would love to another lease.

So i guess it really is, get rich or hunt public land these days. No wonder the number of Licenses sold is going down annually. If you dont have big $$$ you go get shot at at the WMA. hmmm. :eek:

or you move to an area where you can spread out... I'm lucky enough to hunt huge tracks of private land with no pressure...  That being said 3 of of 5 best duck hunts this year were on public ground...  I've jumped 2 Pope and Young sized bucks on WHIA areas while pheasant hunting too... Maybe you guys should start applying for non-resident KS tags.

Public hunting here in TX is a joke!!!  Most of the land is in East Texas where there are less deer, in general.  And the quality of deer is generally lacking....except on the high-fence operations.

Most of the public land in south and west Texas is by drawing only($3-5 to put your name in...can't remember exactly how much).  The best pieces have draw rates of 10% or much less.  Then, if you do get drawn, many of the hunts are by assigned blind.....the same blind every other hunter to hunt the area has used.....think the deer know where they are???

Then the very best "public" hunts are $10 to put in for and your chances of drawing there are miniscule.  Something like 5000 people put in for one of the big game hunts and only ONE gets drawn.

With all that said, I am putting together a private hunt in Illinois with a friend.

Would love to hunt Kansas but all I here about are the big money hunts.  Not many people want to share the info for good cheap hunting....cannot blame them.  I might be tempted to guard those places with secrecy also.

Been invited to Oregon for public hunting but the investment of the trip and not knowing the area is daunting.  But I will try it soon.

I've got nothing to lose... The state is full of ground leased by the State for public hunting... I've had several good pheasant/quail hunts on it in recent years and I've seen some nice deer there around the rifle season... Generally I'm talking about big CRP fields in central/western KS that have some type of tree line or creek running through or along them...  It's not unusual for those counties 20,000 or more acres enrolled in the program...

The biggest whitetail I saw this year was after rifle season on one of these public areas (and I see some huge deer every year).

Dave go to www.87huntingclub.com that is the lease i am on .it is affordable, managed and has great hunting opportunities for deer, hogs, coyote, and fishing in the oxbow lakes, plus it is an annual lease, not just deer season. We are having a predator tournament open to the public to participate in 3/17/ to 3/19, come and have some BBQ and check it out.good hunting

First is a shot at those who thumb their nose at public hunting opps in Texas.Most of these people have never tried it and repeat what they hear.There are many deer and some mighty fine bucks to be had but you must be prepared to get in the woods.

Try website @ southeasttexas.com  they have many leases listed in the areas you want right now looking for members.
Next try website for templeforest.com/default.asp  accept terms and go to texas leases.They list leases by county,Click on highlighted counties for lease listings.Click on pdf to see a map and info on each particular lease.The last time I checked there were several around cleveland area and hardin co.These leases go for around $5.00 per acre total price.Up to you how big a lease/hunters you want.And it will be yours to control.

There are over a million acres of public hunting land in Texas.  I have hunted some, and have friends who only hunt public land.  They have bagged some mighty fine white tail over the years.

The key is to have the maps (provided by TP&W Dept) and scout.  You also need to be in decent physical shape so you can walk in and hunt away from the highways.  Most public hunting is done by guys who hunt within 1/4 mile of the paved roadway.   If you want to be successful hunting public land in Texas, do your homework  and get away from the pavement.
