Case Stretch
« on: August 17, 2006, 06:27:18 PM »
I just bought a 15 in. 7mm08 barrel for my encore and I didn't have any loads made for it. So, I bought me a box of Winchester Supreme (in the gray box)140gr. anyway, when I finally got some time I started working on getting my brass ready to make some loads. Well. in the sierra mannual it states that the length (just case length) should be 2,035 I measured the factory winchester cases (the ones that had been shot) and they measured 2,045. Out of a box 20 rds I shot 18 because I wanted to measure the complete oval of the factory round and with the other one I wanted to pull the bullet and wiegh the powder charge. I know there is no way of knowing what type of powder the bullet company uses I just wanted to know the weight. Anyway, I ended up measuring the case (that was not shot) and it measured believe it or not 2,025. So, the winchester cases stretched a total of .20 thousands. Has this ever happened to anyone else? What would you think caused this problem? I called sierra and spoke with a tech. and he said that it could possibly be the cases were out of spec.

T/Cs are known to have long throats! So I would considr that normal. This is one of the reasons they tell you not to use your reloads in a different gun.

Factory ammo is produced to fit any chamber. So it will naturally be formed to the "loose" side of specifications. If your chamber is towards the loose side also you can easily get that much strech from the first firing. With good reloading skills your reloads will not repeat that nearly as much.  KN
