sizing question

i accidentally ran a .204 ruger brass case through my .243 sizing die.

i got a new set of RCBS dies for the .204 and it looked just like my .243 dies until i pulled the handle lol.

I re-sized the case with the .204 die...is it safe to shoot or could i have stressed the case too much? there are no cracks.

The .204 case is considerably smaller than the .243 case, I would think that you have ended up with a 6mm/.204 at this point. Just run it through your .204 die to reduce the neck to where it should be and go.

Or, have a custom rifle made for the 6mm / .204 cartridge you just created, lol !

You probably strecthed the neck out too much to resize. I'd discard it or keep it around as one of those things you show a new reloader as what happens when ya ain't paying attention. I happen to have one or two of these items sitting on top of my bench right now.


6MM/204? HMMMMM!!!??? Wonder how that'd do with a 60 gr HP? Oughta be kinda interesting!

just for giggles, i seated a 95-grain Ballistic Tip .243 bullet in it. looks pretty cool...would probably be a nice shooting Contender cartridge...

I wonder if wildcats have ever been spawned like this before. Maybe its how the 358 Winchester was made - a 308 cartridge got pushed through 35 caliber die by mistake and the tech at Winchester decided to try to sell it to the executives as a "great idea" and it turned out to be one of the best. Too bad magnum fever hit at the same time.

I agree with you Paul, that is why I am fooling around with neck sizing only for a 30-06 pump gun.  Might not work, but I really do not see why other than because they say it does not work for pumps and lever guns.

It depends on the pump action whether you can neck size only or not. Most slide actions don't have a locking bolt so the face of the breach is pushed back which lets the case grow longer. If you are shooting loads that are just heavy enough to work the action reliably you might get away with it or if you are using one of the few that have a rotating bolt lock-up you will have more success. Let us know how it turns out, will you?
