Go for it. The 917's are the same rifle in different stocks and blued or stainless steel. I have a new 917vs, grandson has two year old 917v. The new trigger is no better than the old one, heavy pull, sloppy feel. Both are very accurate despite the triggers. The trigger can be made much better for almost nothing or you can change to a Rifle Basix for about 80 bucks. I like to to tinker with stuff so I shimmed my trigger and sear to get rid of the side slop and have pull down to 2 1/2 pounds and installed a trigger stop. It's a sweet shooting rifle.

Don`t know about the new Marlin but, a lot of Savage owners that own HMRs with synthetic stocks wished they had purchased rifles with wood stocks. More rigid and better balanced.

This Savage owner woudn't have the wooden stock, and loves the synthetic stock.  Many of the internet claims that the stock is flimsy were from people repeating it from what they read other places.  Anyway, in a 17HMR recoil is not likely to flex the stock, so if one handles it in the shop they can decide if it will work for them.
