Handloads for .300 H&H

I am buying a 1983 Remington Model 700 Classic in .300 H&H. I intend to load it with 220gr Hornady RN for black bear, elk or moose. I have done a little checking and it looks like this caliber is capable of ~2500fps MV with the 220gr bullets.

I haven't had a chance to refer to my reloading manuals. Does anyone have any info they can share? Any pet loads?

BTW, I have ordered Hornady 220gr RN and Winchester brass...

^ I changed my mind and bought 200gr Nosler Accubonds instead of the 220gr Hornady RN, although I will probably buy some of those eventually.

After reading through Lyman, Speer, Hodgdon, Hornady and Nosler I decided to try IMR-4350, H-4350 and IMR-4831. All of these look like they should work pretty well, all of these powders had pretty similar Min-Max numbers.

I set the scales at 63.5 grains for all 3, as a starting load. I am hoping for 2700 fps MV with good accuracy.

C.O.L. is listed as 3.600" and I set my bullets to 3.595". The rifle will be used for hunting so reliable feeding is my number concern. I don't play around with seating depths anyway...

You set your scale at what for a "starting load"?


AA-4350 From 58.0 grains to 63.0 grains
 Winchester WLR Primer

H-4350 From 49.9 grains to 64.0 grains
 Winchester WLR Primer

IMR-4350 From 53.3 grains to 65.0 grains
 Winchester WLR Primer

IMR-4831 From 50.7 grains to 67.0 grains
 Winchester WLR Primer

ricciardelli after looking through 5 different manuals and checking Min-Max loadings on these 3 powders I set the scale at 63.5 grs for all 3.

The Max loads on these vary according to my manuals but 63.5 grs was a comfortable starting point for each IMHO.

IMR-4350 is closest to the Max load of the 3...

Where in Alberta are you?  I am here in Lethbridge.  I load for my 300 H&H.  I love the rifle - an old remington 721.  I shoot 180 grain Sierras out of it with 62.8 grains of IMR 4350.  Gave me a four shot group of .428 in the spring.  Got my first elk with it last year.
It is rather fun to shoot something that not too many people use.

qballs I am in Whitecourt.

Yes I agree on the .300 H&H. I only know 1 other guy who has one of thse. His is also the 1983 Model 700 Classic. He's killed lots of moose and deer with it.

None of the newer .30 cal mags, starting with the .300Win do it any better. The only obvious drawback to the H&H is the 3.600" C.O.L. Everything I read says the .300 H&H is the best though for the 200gr and heavier bullets, and that's what I intend to do with it.

I bought mine off the Exchange forum on www.CanadianGunNutz.com. Mint condition rifle!!  :-)


qballs have you chrony'd those 180gr loads? I was pretty sure the 63.5gr IMR-4350 load (with 200gr Nosler Accubond) looked okay according to my manuals; I may have to reconsider.
Still waiting to mount a scope on the rifle, so haven't gotten to the range yet.

No I haven't used a chrony.  Starting to shoot a fair bit again this month.
Pretty excited, as I should get my cow elk draw, mule deer draw, and maybe cow moose this year!
I am currently adjusting the trigger on my 300 H&H.  Right now it is set at about 7 pounds!
I have not even really looked at the Nosler data in depth.
In the Sierra manual I worked the load up and it had suggested this as a good hunting load. The accuracy was good.
 I tend to use IMR 4350 for everything that I reload, from a .243, .270 Win, 30-06, and 300 H&H.  I should try some other powders, but this seems to be okay for now.

I rechecked my manuals (again) and was satisfied that 63.5 grs would be a safe starting load; went to the range today.

FYI IMR-4350 sure is a good powder!  :)

I fired 5 shots into an inch with avg MV or 2700 fps with the 200 gr Accubond. Wonderful load, right out of the box. I am not going to do anything 'cept load up enough for deer hunting!

As I said, I also mixed this same 63.5 grs with H-4350 and IMR-4831 and those were pretty decent accuracy wise, just progressively slower. The H-4350 avg'd 2650 fps and the IMR-4831 2600 fps. They were both good enough to go hunting with tomorrow... like 1.5" for 5 shots.
