After 5 years of running around WI, I finally found a Remington 7600 in 257 Roberts. To good to be true! I think it will fit in nice with my 300 Savge and 35 Whelen. I also got lucky enough to purchase a nice  760 Carbine in 308 Win. Can't get a much better shopping trip to local gun show. Now if I could find a 7400 in 35 Whelen, maybe.

I really am envious - I have heard of 25-06 7600 and years ago they made the 760 in 257 but I have never come across a 7600 in 257.  I have a 35 Rem in 7600 That is proving to be a very nice gun for the woods in PA.  Let uys know how it shoots.  I saw some where loads fo 257 +p loads which should make the 257 really perform well.   Let me know if you want data may be I could tell you where to get the data.

257Robert you have something there the blue book dont even show a 257 in that model is it a re-barrel or a factory job? :D   JIM

The 7600-257 Roberts is a factory gun. I have seen one in 25-06, I believe our local dealer still has that rifle(new in box). The gunsmith that I use thought the gun was right around 10 years old or so. He believed that they were made up for a distrubuter from out east. My favorite place I used to purchase from, which has sadly closed down last month, used to deal in alot of oddball firearms. He said that he had them when they were produced. Impossible to get a hold of once the supply dried up. The ironic part of the whole story is that I had all but given up and  was going to have a rifle custom barreled. If anyone out there finds one for sale, get it, run and don't look back! Once things warm up a little bit around here, I will shoot it and let you know how it shoots. I have a Blr-81 and a Ruger Ultralight in 257 and they both shoot like a dream. I hope this one won't let me down.

Im not doubting you but I would take real good care of that rifle as it dont show up in the blue book or at least in the one I have here and its a couple years old so I may need to update my material, but I would look into it you may have something you might cherish moreso as time go by as far as the 257 roberts go I like it and I let $20.00 come between me and a Winchester lightweight model 70 once and wish I wasnt so cheap and had spent that extra $20 and bought that rifle. :D   JIM

There's a place in Pennsylvania that gets 7600's in funky calibers...a different one each year as a special run, I think.  I've heard of 358's and 7mm-08's too.  It could be from this place.     DL

There is one on Auctionarms.com starting at $775. A little steep??? I hunt in Pennsylvania so a semi is of no use to me, but I sure wold like to shoot a semi Whelen!! Good Luck!!!

The place back east that has special runs of Remington pumps os Grices in Clearfiled PA.  I have heard that the magic number is 500 minimum to cover tooling etc for a special caliber and like someone said about once a year they have a batch made special. They do both wholesale and retail all over the place so they have the cloout to get what they want.  Remington won't even admit that they do this for them porbably to promote movement of stock calibers.    The pumps are a favorite back here in PA for woods use because PA wont permit semi-autos.   Regards,

jhm-I don't think the 257 will show up in anybook, checked all of mine and couldn't find anything either. The only reason I knew they were around is becasue the dealer I used to purchase from had them in stock at one time. I have seen 7600's in 6mm, 260, 25-06, the recent run of 35 Rem and I owned a 7mm-08 for a while, until I sold it to a buddy who wouldn't stop bugging me until I sold it to him. I wish Remington would standardize some of these calibers. Ya gottta admit it, the calibers they offer are good, but stale if you like being different.

stv-Grices, that you refer, to seems to ring a bell. Do you know if they have a web site or any way to get a hold of them? The person I used to buy from used to get some very odd firearms from someplace and it very well could of been them. Curious to find out what they have.

Robert 257:  I dont know if they do but I have a friend moving to the Carlisle Pa. area and when he gets setteled I may have him start looking for some of the odd cal. unlisted Rem. stuff around there. :D   JIM

I have a 760 in .257 Roberts.  If I am  reading the barrel code correctly it was made in 1954.  It is factory drilled (and stocked) for scope use.  I have only shot Winchester 117 grain power points (+P) in it so far.  I have a box of Light Mags to try when time permits.

It is a very nice rifle with the "five diamond" checkering pattern on the forearm.   The plastic grip cap features a running buck in relief.   Just some neat older touches on a nice hunting rifle.   It will shoot 1.5 groups with a Weaver K3 and the factory winchester ammo.

I made a .308 Carbine out of a 1953 30-06.  Ordered the carbine barrel and mags from www.e-gunparts    Ended up having to get a bolt also, as the original 30-06 bolt would not mate up to the barrel extension on the .308 Carbine barrel.  The switch took about 1/2 an hour, just need a proper sized punch to turn off the forearm tube.  I also did a little grinding on the metal ejection port cover from the -06 so I could use it on the carbine.  Very easy to do on a pedestal grinder.  Most of the time is spent holding the ejection port cover in place as the barrel/barrel extension assembly is put in place, and the forearm tube turned in.  The headspace checked out fine and the carbine is quite accurate.   And very handy.  I put a 2X7 Redfield on it.

Next phase will be a cleaning up of some pitting on the carbine reciever, a reblue, and refinish of the forearm and buttstock.   Everytime I get ready to do it hunting season is coming up and I end up waiting.

Of course I'm keeping the .257 as it came from Remington.  It's in great shape.
