Casting Bullets For ML
« on: September 04, 2006, 11:36:40 AM »
Hey Guys,
Went to the store the other day and was suprised with the price of bullets for muzzleloaders (Barnes Mz & Powerbelts + sabots). Even the maxi and round balls are not cheap especially if you like to shoot alot.  I have a Ruger Old Army and a TC Hawken .50cal and 2 NEF ML (24 inch and 26 inch). I ordered a Lee furnace, lead dipper, 320 grain REAL + .490 RB mould for the TC as well as a lee conical and round ball mould for the Old Army. I was wondering if the .517 R.E.A.L. 320gr. cast bullet will work in the Huntmans?  I would also like to know what size round balls I should shoot out of them? There are so many diameters to choose from. There is not much uniformity in different makers of muzzleloaders.

I really appreciate all the help I get from you all.
Thanks,
Jerry (aka Pharmboy)

I cast my own maxi-balls and they shoot just fine.  Some soft lead and your good to go.  If your needing lead I have a bunch and can send some your way for a buck a pound and $8.00 shipping, per one rate postal box full.  I've got a bullet lube formula given to me here as well, I'd send some of it all made up your way too.  Mostly bee's wax, Ivory soap and lanolin (bag balm).
I'd not bother with round balls except for fun shooting, but the lee's should be ok, they engrave when rammed in.
If life is a beach, why am I so crabby?

Buy yourself a Lee 44 or 45 cal mould I use a 300 gr and 240 gr 44 cal work very good in sabot and are cheaper when deveoping loads
