Forum settings changed?
« on: March 31, 2003, 01:45:57 PM »
Is it just me?  I now need to log in before I can peruse this forum (actually, several of the GB forums, but not all).

Have some settings changed since our new moderator took over?  Was there a problem before (I never perceived one)?

Whazzup?

You should double check your internet options and make sure you can still receive cookies. Once you log in, you should be good to go every time.

It started for me a day or two ago, too.  Its just this forum, and the "TC Encore and Contender Rifles" forum that require logging in (at least, as far as I can tell).  All of the other forums that I regularly visit do NOT require a log in.  I don't mind too much at home (except its one more step) but I'm leery of checking in from work (when I really should be actually working).  Since both of these forums have new moderators, I thought that that might be the common factor.

If this is something our Moderator (or the Mighty GB himself) can change, I strongly reccomend that it be changed back.

If these settings had been in place before I joined, I would never have joined, as they keep newcomers out.  I "lurked" around this group for a while before deciding to join.  (I lurk around some other groups, too, while I'm trying to decide if the group is worthwhile, or worthless.)

Yes that is correct. Something changed. I changed it.

Now on certain forums you must be logged in to view the forums. I have had some problems in regard these forums caused by non registered people reading and copying messages and then creating problems for me. I have taken this action on those forums to put an end to the problems.

Yes it might have the effect of causing some folks who have just found the site to move on without trying it or it might not. Since doing this I've had more new registrations than in any similar time frame since the first couple days since we moved to this format. The change may or may not be permanent. Time will tell.

i have enjoyed reading and occasionally posting to this forum. I even stayed through the infamous bellm war. I have not always agreed with decisions made but he who writes the checks gets to write the rules. I can't on principle participate in any site or forum that requires my logging in. i would appreciate an email if this requirement is lifted.

thanks,

Vic L.

Vic L.,
"I can't on principle participate in any site or forum that requires my logging in."  why is this? it is free to join and to sign in so it is no big deal just another step before we can read the post. if you sign in once and check the little box under the sign in page you do not have to keep signingh in every time

Well, it must be a slow night because I just took the time to attempt to view each and every one of the 100 forums on this site and was requested to log in to 25 of them.  I may be mistaken but I think a couple of them have changed just since last night ("Handloading for Rifles & Handguns" and "Product Reviews").  I can understand having to log in to the "Classified" and the "Swap" forums, but "Hiking & Backpacking"?  Mortars & Cannon?

GB, I'm sorry that you are having trouble maintaining your copyright, but I'm not sure how this log in business will discourage pirates.  If I wanted to steal content, I could register under a dozen fake names, and re-register every time you caught me.

I must say that theres something about it that just puts me off.  Obviously I haven't decided to drop out (yet) but I really don't like it.  In exploring the internet, Ive found a lot of discussion groups that are a total waste of time.  I must've registered to a dozen Yahoo!Groups, each just long enough to find out how awful they were (I'd quit them before I even got the "Welcome" e-mail).  So far, I have found the best combination of useful info, experience, informed opinion & just plain decent people right here at GBO.

I'm sorry to have cluttered up this forum's bandwidth with this entire (off topic) thread, but I'm glad to know whats happening & why.

MoustacheMike. It isn't copyright or pirates that are the concern. I do not wish to get into a full explaination and am not going to. But a bit of clarification maybe.

I have had some folks leave this site mad as a wet hen mostly because they weren't allowed to have their way when I felt "their way" wasn't the right way. They have been causing me some problems. The forums chosen were chosen for a very specific purpose because those are the forums that these individuals primarily associated with. That's as much as I'm gonna say on the matter. If you were sitting on this end of these forums you'd understand real clearly.

I offer them to you folks free of charge. I ask only you follow the few basic rules I have. I have to handle all of the problems that crop up as a result and pay all the bills whether the site income covers it or not. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't I'm paying from my personal pocket so all of you can play for free. So from time to time I will do things that might not make the world happy and sometimes you might not fully understand. I don't do them just for my entertainment or to hassel you. I do it to lessen the problems I have and reduce the time I have to spend fighting alligators.

You are each free to do as you see best. Stay or go. Often things like this can be made temporary in nature only until the problem is solved. Maybe that will be the case here. Maybe not. I cannot forsee the future.

BTW all were changed at the same time. No more new ones have been added.

This has been the cleanest forum I have been on. There are some that get into pissing matches, porno and off the wall subjects. I think GB has his hands full and does a great job keeping the junk off the forum. My 2 cents.

Your sight is the best place I have visited and look forward each morning to logging on and checking out the forums. No problems here with logging on each time. Just one little click and it's fixed. If it keeps the snakes out, so be it.
See ya Vic. :D
Keep up the good work and I have always heard, "Those that are forced to make or change the rules and decisions are doing it because others can't follow the rules that are already in place." Follow the rules or find another place to go. 8)

GB, you design the platform and lay out the ground rules and I'll just ride your coat tails, enjoying the dialog and interaction. I don't mind a bit, having to log in to what I enjoy. I can't believe that someone would complain about what is offered them with no cost attached. I was taught as a very small child that when in someone else's house..I was to follow their rules and not just my parents rules..Like others have stated..I very much enjoy GBO.  I try to visit alittle while every day.  Sort of like an old time hardware store ( the kind with the gun/ammo section in the back),where one could grab a cup of coffee or Coke and just talk guns, hunting, fishing, whose ailing, and that sort of thing, but this gun counter covers the whole world!  Oh what fun!  of course when dealing with the whole world GB get some guests who do not know how to behave and must be shown the door..wouldn't have happened in the old hardware store,'cause more than likely the owner knew your folks and you just wouldn't behave that way!!!  Simple approach I know, but it still works for me!

GB-  It doesn't bother me a bit to sign in and I couldn't agree more with the other replies made on this thread.  Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
