Recoil Reduction
« on: August 07, 2006, 01:25:24 PM »
In the NEF catalog, they reference some kind of recoil reducer for the 10-gauge shotguns. I would imagine that it is just a weight that fits in the stock. Will this same weight fit in a regular handi-rifle stock? I would think this would be a good addition to a synthetic stock on a 45.70 to help ease the recoil by making the rifle heavier. Also, are there any of the ready-fit recoil pads that fit the handi-rifle? I'm afraid if I added a slip-on recoil pad, the reach would be too long. I suppose I could put a regular buttplate on, but I'd rather just put on a good recoil pad and eliminate the slip-on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have to calm down the recoil on my .45-70 because I have had two detached retinas in the last two years and don't want either to detach again. I also won't be shooting any 10-gauge shotguns either.

Steve

I am a recoil weenee.  I filled my ultra stock with steel shot.  Added a couple of pounds and made a great difference.  You could easily do the same in the synthetic stock, you would just have to put it in a sock or something of that nature and add some foam rubber or something to fill the rest of the void in the stock.  It really made the difference for me.

Good luck

The only prefit recoil pad from Limbsaver is for the 988 slug gun, the best choice of their other offerings is the small grind to fit which fits Handi and Ultra stocks with little grinding if you leave the pad full for a bigger footprint. They do have a pre-fit that is close to the wood stock, but it's bigger and the hole spacing won't match the synthetic stock which doesn't matter on the wood stock.

I made a sissy stick for my Handi.  3/4" copper pipe about 10" long I filled it with lead when was casting bullet one night, I have a wood stock though.  I just slip the sissy stick in the butt stock when I want to shoot off the bench and take it out if I am hunting (read hiking up the PorkyPine Mountians).  The sissy stick help balance my rile when I have my muzzleload barrel on.  Ill find out how it works out when I get my frame 24" 243 and 32" 45-70 barrel back in a month.

I use a rest while doing bench work.  The outters varmit rest was my first rest.  I noted that if I positioned the rest on a bench where i could sit up straight, similer to the position I would be in while standing, the recoil moved me more than when I was leaning forward.  In other words it don't hurt so bad.  I watch people at the range, most people bring sand bags, roll up rifle cases, or sleeping bags.  Then they get down or lean forward in almost a prone position to shoot.  In that position their body gets all the recoil, they have no flexiability to absorb it.  If those people don't stop after a few shots they start flinching.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Fill the stock with #6 lead shot and tape the bolt hole closed...The get a small grind to fit Limbsaver recoil pad and fit it to the stock...It tames my 45-70 300 grain 2400fps Nosler partition loads down to a firm shove....Also..while your at it...get a Uncle Mikes neopreane shell holder and put it on the stock...get some soft foam and put it under the shell holder and make a nice cheek piece for it...Getting all the recoil slammmed against your cheek bone cause a-lot of pain...and isn't needed or advised in your condition...Doing these 2 things will make shooting heavy loads from a Handi much more pleasent...This is how I have all of mine set up..and won't do anything different...

I'm hoping I may have solved my problem. I bought a standard-style synthetic buttstock from Choate and their forearm with the storage compartments. I put a lead ingot in the butt (there is room for plenty more) and wrapped in s rag and stuffed the whole works in the stock for a snug fit. Then, I made a weight up for the forearm of some old lead type I had laying around and wedged it tightly in the rear compartment of the forearm. Hopefully, this added weight will help the recoil. If this isn't enough, I can always put more lead in the buttstock or in the forearm. Hope this works.

Thanks for all the responses. Looks like I'm not the only one with recoil problems.
