optimum nose length

I understand how the nose to crimp length plays a roll in velocity and pressure (as mentioned in your book).  But is there an ideal nose length?

I plan I buying two molds, one is a 45cal 325gr WFNGC and the other is a 44cal 260gr WFNGC.  I currently am shooting these bullets cast by Montana Bullet Works (highly recommended).  The 45 cal has a 0.380 nose and the 44 has a 0.340 nose.  These work fine as they are but if there is a possibility for improvement by changing the nose height...

The 45 will be used in a FA83 in 454, MAX nose length is 0.400 so a 0.390 nose would be the longest to be safe.

The 44 will be used in a FA97 44 special, MAX nose length is 0.465

Both will be used for medium to heavy loads.

  Thank you for the reccomendation of Montana Bullet works.  They are good people, will do their customers right and are a family business which needs the income.

  I like to make all WFN's with a .4 nose unless shorter is needed for lever guns, or if the bullet is a short one (one of the lighter weights).  The 44 260 you plan to purchase is a shorter bullet which does best with a .35 nose, and I cut them for that no matter what the customer asks for.  Longer noses on the WFN cause a enough  drag in the barrel that little is gained by added powder space.  The WFN's are designed to be hard hitters without maximum power, so don't need max powder room.

  When max power potential is wanted, the LFN and WLN, the latter suited to the heavier weights only, can wear a .5 and longer nose, allowing extreme powder capicity and velocity potential.

  When ordering a mold, put down the nose length you think you want but tell me if you aren't absolutely certain your choice is best, and tell me what gun or guns you want to use it in.  I'll personalize it for your needs.  That's what LBT is all about.

  There is no dumb question.  Ask about anything you aren't absolutely postive about.  I get real unhappy if you aren't happy with what I make!
