Worm, I like a short chain when trapping coon. The shorter chain allows for a drowning set uo in shallower water. The longer the chain, the more water depth you need.

If using a drowning set  the drowning lock is put close to  trap as possible  so you can drown coon quickly and on  land sets depends on how things are set up.. a small trap i use only 6 inches chain and larger traps  i use 18 inches with shock spring... drags i use  8 feet chain or more.  Never use less than 6 feet when using drags

Early on in my trapping I was under the mistaken notion that the longer the chain on a drowning set the faster the animal would drown because of the extra weight. After losing a couple of beaver that were able to get the chain wrapped up on something and pull out I switched to short chains on all my beaver sets. I've never used drags on coon sets, but might have to on a place I just got permission to trap on. Its an old quarry and I don't think there are going to be to many places where I can anchor a trap with a stake because of all the rock. The majority of my coon traps have about 10-12 inches of chain with a mid chain swivel on them and a drowning swivel on the end for either drowning or rebar stakes. Thanks for the information Boggy and RDFX, I really apperciate it. Worm
