Just wondering what you seasoned sixgunners think best fits your tastes. If you have reasons, please share 'em. If you have anecdotes, those are welcome, too. Thanks!

EDIT: Oops, forgot to add a poll option for pre-62 grip style.

First, I have never had the opportunity to handle an Old Model SBH!

I had a blue New Model SBH with a 7 1/2 inch barrel when I was stationed in Alaska and I loved it!  Sold it before I left the state, regretted it ever since!
I carried that thing anytime I was Hunting, Fishing, or just Camping!  It just felt right to have it on my side!
After a bunch of years, I finally got another one, only this one is in Stainless!  Really shoots good!
The first thing I did to this SBH was the same as I did in Alaska, I added a Pachmayr Presentation Grip!

Matters not to me really.  I guess since I prefer the Bisley tyle and the OM's didn't come in that configuartion I'd have to say NM.

old model all the way.  i had a bunch of new models,  i wasnt impressed.  sold them off and got a freedom arms.  ran across an old model at a gun show.  it was a big step up in quality from what the new models are.  and reminded me more of my freedom arms gun than it did a ruger.

there is a definate difference in workman's ship on the two guns.  if i ever were to own a blackhawk anything again,  it will definately be an old model.

It started with a Single Six about 5 years ago.  I almost sold it because I was too busy shooting autos.  Then discovered the joys of revolvers, especially SAs.  Just bought a  blued Blackhawk 45 Colt with a 4 5/8 in barrel.  Spent quite a bit of time loading up different loads and trying them.  Now I plan to buy a Blackhawk in 357 with a 6.5 in barrel later this month. Then maybe another 45 Colt with a longer barrel.   I cant stop myself.

It would have to be the old 3 screw models. Back in 1971 my dad bought a Ruger single six combo for me and the Super Blackhawk in .44 mag for him. 35 years later I still have them both. The .44 mag has less then a box of shells through it and I still have the box, paperwork and the orginal sales receipt.

I have two Blackhawks and a Ruger Old Army.  My Blackhawks are a blue 5 ½ inch convertible in 45 Colt/ 45ACP and a 7 ½ inch 30 Carbine.  The Old Army is the 5 ½ inch bright stainless model with an after market R&D cylinder in 45 Colt.  They are all a lot of fun to shoot, but, if I could have only one it would be the 45 Convertible.  It is extremely accurate with anything form 45ACP target loads to HOT 300gr 45 Colt loads.

I sure wish they could incorporate New model safety features with the 4 clicks of the hammer of the Old model----not sure if I like the pins or screws better----the pins give a cleaner look while the screws give it a more of an old time beefy look.

After revisiting this thread two months later, all I can say is that I'm really shocked. :o But, it probably explains why every gunshop I go to always has at least two under the glass. :)

Since I haven't got one yet, I need opinions. Within the next 2 weeks I plan on getting a Blackhawk. Just having a hard time deciding. ??? It will be a single action. The decision is between a 41 mag blued with a 6 1/2 inch barrel or a 45 colt with a 7 1/2 inch barrel. It will be for hunting! Give me some opinions! ;)

Snuffer:

Do you reload? Around here all I find in .45 Colt is CAS ammo, and it's pretty darn mild to say the least. Not what you want to hunt with. From what I read here in this forum, most guys who hunt with a .45 reload their own ammo. So if you don't, you might want to consider the .41 mag.

The .41 mag is a greatly underrated cartridge that most shooters know nothing about. Very accurate, shoots very flat, mild recoil (compared to a .44 mag, or hot .45), and you can get factory ammo from 175-gr. to 240-gr. (Mine really likes the 240-gr Winchester Platinum Tip HP.)

My vote would be for the 6.5" .41 mag. ;D

I suppose it would be the one I have right now, the 50th Anniversary .44.  This is actually my third BH/SBH and my fourth .44 mag.  My first was an S&W M29 with the 4" bb (blame it on Elmer).  It kicked too much and seemed to come straight back in the hand.

My next was a stainless SBH with a 10.5" bbl that I had cut to 5.5 or 6".  It was OK with the long tube.   With the short tube it would rotate enough to gouge the web of my hand-not condusive to good shooting.

My third .44 was the BH with 5.5" bbl, round trigger guard and fluted cylinder.  Same problem as above.  Will I never learn?

So far I've been sticking to lighter loads (they still churn up the backstop pretty well) so no gouging, although a little knucke rapping at times.  I think the old style grip frame and checkered grips help.

I did fire a friend's 300 grain Lee/lots of H-110  load which was rather stout, to say the least.  I then tried his Bisley with the bbl cut to 4 5/8"- much more controllable and pleasent to shoot.

So, my final favorite would probably be a Bisley with a 4 5/8" or 5.5" bbl but in .45 Colt since it will have a signifigantly greater cross sectional area and a larger meplat which is what does the dirty work, right?

well my dad has a ruger super blackhawk in 44 mag 4 5/8", great gun, i picked up a ruger super black hawk stainless steel with a scope at the gun show and thought it was perfect for me, so either a 44 mag or 41 mag ruger super black hawk stainless steel  6"-7.5" with a scope or propoint, i'm not that much on revolvers when it comes to plinking, but this would be mainly a outdoor carry gun.
i dont know what the difference is or whether my dads and the one i picked up are new models, i know my dad's is quite a few years old but ehh i dont know
I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?"
Well, to tell the truth I shoot a Springfield XD so it doesnt really matter.
