Start with 30 grains of 4F if you are using golf balls for shot.  Their mass is so low that slower powder doesn't burn fast enough.  Go up depending on what range you are trying to achieve.  If you are going for much more than 100 yards, you should be using a howitzer or cannon instead of a mortar.

Could this explain why I was so disappointed the first time we fired my cannon? We used ffg and golfballs and everything but the .22  (.45 44-4570-30-30-made more noise than the "big gun"(1.687 bore with no powder chamber and 18 inch length bore)

Is it really 1.687" bore?  That has to be a tight fit for golf balls.

Could be.  The golf ball provides very little resistance so the pressure doesn't get very high, and you need some pressure at the muzzle to get a loud report.  How much powder were you using?  Has the report gotten louder with experience?

For my mortars (1.70 - 1.75 bore diameters) I use one to two .45acp cases full of FFFg.

Range is from 100 towards 200 yards with the above load, 45 degree elevation, tubes being about 2 calibers long.

First 4FG is a priming powder and should only be use very small quantities for priming only. Don't use it as a main charge, it generates to much  pressure.

If you are firing you golf ball mortar to make noise you will be disapointed.  This is the the best I could do for noise...http://www.fototime.com/34A6B4F61DB2108/conv.wmv
