Does anybody reguard these as bear cartridges?

.358 winchester
.35 wheelin
.350 remington magnum
.338 federal

Just curious about finding some non magnum bear ammo. I know the .350 rem is mag, but i hear its a light kicker.  Thanks all

I think a more appropriate question would be "Does any one NOT regard these as bear cartridges?"

Its hard to argue with the effectiveness of a big hole, but for blacks I would be comfortable with a good bullet and anything .270 or up - including a .30-30.

I would use any of them, Whelen is my choice though...since I just got one..... ;)

For Black  Bears, yes.  For Alaska Browns, I would go with the Whelen or the .350 Remington, just for my own peace of mind.

Why not try a 416 Rigby, it is not a Magnum.  ;D

MJ, are you going to hunt these brutes? The stalk is pretty impressive and the rifle you have better best be able to stop a charge when the situation gets tense. I have gone after plenty of grizzly here in my area and can tell you the only difference between these interior and the coastal cousins is the food source and that definately brings about a greater need of a larger caliber.

You're selection is abit light. They can do if you have everything in your favor but that is not always the case. Those animals have the desire to live and are very intelligent-don't think otherwise.

For Black Bears they are all great.  For Grizzly, .358 Winchester- too slow not enough energy.  .338 Federal, I honestly can't say about this cartridge, it's too new and unproven, but I don't feel the energy would be there.  It's parent cartridge the .308Win is totally unacceptiable.  .350 Rem Mag-The bullet is too light.  The 350 can only be loaded with a 200 grain bullet and still fit into the magazine, a 225 or 250 grain bullet is too long.  I know this I own two of them.  Of the three the .35 Whelen is the only one I fell is suitiable for Grizzlies or Alaskian Brown Bear.  The Whelen can be loaded with a 250grain bullet.  For the Brown Bear it is the suggested minimum.

Why not a 338 Win Mag?  Middle of the road from the Whelen and 416  Rigby and it will get the job done.  At least, so I've read.

I was just curious as to the medium bore bear stopers.  I would probaly reguard the .338 win mag as the champ of the popular rounds in the middle bores.  I personly reguard the .45-70 as a great heavy game stopper and its available in some real handy platforms, so on a bear hunt, i think thats what i would go for.  Im not going brownie hunting, but im going to be hunting other species in bear country, so i think ill pick up a 45-70 guide  gun stoked with some real hanus handloads or garrets etc.  for the camp gun.  In my research it seems the .45-70 would be about the best thing going, esp. in a quick handeling rifle like the marlin.  Sounds like the round is gaining in popularity on the dark continent as well with the hotter loads.  Ive seen 5 articles in the last two weeks about cape buffalo hunting with the .45-70 and everyone said it was fantastic.  Then to top it off, i saw a penetration test were it out penetrated the .375, .458 win, and 458 lott.  http://www.handloads.com/misc/linebaugh.penetration.tests.asp.
