Re: Anyone used the 6.5 and/or .309 JDJ?

Sorry about the botched, double post.  My server crashed at the worst possible time, and posted my topic sans text.

What I wrote, that didn't show up in my post, was this;  I just bought a Contender Carbine in 30-30, and was thinking of another barrel, for whitetail and mule deer, cougar, javelina.  Max range about 300 yards.  Would the 6.5 JDJ work, or would I need to move up to a .309 JDJ instead?

Thanks for any replies.

Mike

Thanks for the response.  I'd rather get the 6.5 anyway, and then maybe a .375 JDJ for the big stuff later on.  Figured the 6.5 would be more recoil-friendly than the .309 for training the little ones also.

Try a 6.5mm BullBerry Improved. It is basically the same as the 6.5 mm JDJ but used 30-30 brass to form instead of 225 Winchester (read expensive and hard to find). I got my 6.5mm BullBerry Improved from BullBerry Barrel Works. Hurricane Utah. Mine will put 5 in 1/2" at 100 yards consistantly. Goos shooting!

Tatonka, thanks for the response, because brass availability is the one reservation I have with the small bore JDJ's (although the .225 case is very strong, which is a plus).

I think I need to do some ballistics research to see what would work best for my needs.  Heck, maybe a 30-30 AI or 7-30 AI would do the trick.  Don't know, but 1/2 the fun is doing the research, right?
