45 ACP Accuracy
« on: July 19, 2006, 04:45:46 AM »
This may be the wrong place to ask this question. I have been trying to put 5 shots in one ragged hole at 50 yards with a 15" 45 ACP Encore from a bench with scoped. I have been unable to do it. I have gotten 4 in one ragged hole twice. Seaveral three holers. Is it just me or is this impossable with the 45 ACP caliber at that distance? I see that most people shot that caliber at 25 yards. Is there something am I missing besides the target.  Thanks for your time, Twyman

With a 45 ACP 1911 Bullseye gun, the standard of accuracy is 2" or better at 50 yards, and I have seen some that will do 1.5".  Maybe there are some out there that will do even better.   A 1" -1.5" group is pretty much a one hole group.   I would think that you should be able to do better with an Encore than with a 1911 Bullseye gun if you can find the right load.

To me the remarkable thing is not so much the decent inherent accuracy of the cartridge and the way in which gunsmiths have been able to figure out how to make a 1911 shoot pretty accurately out to 50 yards. The amazing thing is that, with practice and talent, some shooters are able to hit that ten ring consistently while standing and shooting with one hand.

By the way, if you want best accuracy with the 45ACP, try Nosler's 185 grain jacketed bullet using Bullseye powder.

If you do any 100 yard accuracy tests with the 45ACP Encore, will you please post your findings here. I'd be very interested to see them. Thanks.

One thing that may be affecting your groups is bullet velocity versus barrel length. The slower the bullet or longer the barrel the more important it is to not allow the gun to move at all between the break of the sear and the bullet exiting the muzzle.

Broom Riders right, I think that is why I have such a hard time shooting my 1911 off the bench.  I can ususally shoot better groups offhand than off the bench.  I think with slightly changing my grip off the bench, this slow bullet has plenty of time to move the gun around before the bullet exits.  Offhand my grip is more consistant.  Keep shooting, you will get your group.  Took me almost 2000 full power .475's to get my 50 yd. one-holer.  Ouch.

Could be. It is an issue with competitive air pistol and 45ACP. Follow through is really important with any pistol, just more so with ones that shoot slow bullets.  The encouraging thing is that the air pistol shooters, 45ACP bullseye shooters, and 32-20 silhouette shooters have figured it out pretty well. If they can do it, so can you.
