Help Me Pick A New Handi
« on: August 01, 2006, 12:33:38 PM »
I'm looking to get a new Handi soon for deer hunting.  I like the .243 "regular barrel" gun.

Does anybody know if the wood stock/forearm version is more accurate than the synthetic version?  I think I remember reading in another forum that the barrel resonance (O-ring) vertical string fix is not needed as much with the wood version.

Can the wood version be painted with camo paint, without excessive flaking?

What about accuracy in the blue vs. stainless versions?

Thanks, I appreciate your help.

Wood is easier to work with in case the lock up isn't as tight as desired. Shimming behind the forearm spacer works very well in this. The O-ring works, but often you might have to sand down the barrel channel inside the forearm to make sure nothing touches. No big deal, it only takes a min or 2.
Still some shoot very good with the synthetic stocks. My 243 barrel-standard contour- is great with just factory fodder. The Federal Power Shocks 100gr shoot always  at 1" or under, mostly under at about 3/4. And it carries a synthetic forearm.
The main thing to look for is lock up and side to side play. If there are any then accuracy will suffer.
It's been said before by several and myself included, I like my Handi barrels to lower slowly when I break the action. Not just fall down. I like a tight fit.
Best bet is to buy the wood version and then later down the road buy a synthetic forearm to see how it fits your barrel to receiver. If it's tight then go ahead and pick up a stynthetic buttstock.
The 243's can be real shooters and a ton of fun too. I am working up a handload for mine now and this lowly standard barrel is really shinning. You might want to consider a 25-06. Lots of versitility and grain of bullet to work with.

I too like the long 26" barrels..and would say go with a 25-06 or 280 Rem..If going for the 243..I would choose the 24" bull barrel everytime..mine was a super accurate barrel..(and still is...I sold it to mitchell)...

I prefere wood over synthetics..and as myarmor has said..it doesn't take much to work them..

A 243 is a nice round if you accept it's limitations, but why should you have to? I agree with the guys..at least step up to a 25-06. IMHO

The 26" barrel on the 280 Rem in a Handi is a real nicely balanced setup.  I felt like it was a better balance than the standard or even the 24" bull barrel.  It looks better, in addition, the 280 will work for most any critter out there.

Mine was pushing 140gr bullets at 3100+ at loads well below max.

Handi:

I have to agree with you on the 280 Rem....

TNRed...

Pick up a 280...and you might not even have to handload for it...Here's what mine did with the 140 grain factory Remington load..and the 140 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws..
