fred 38/55 t0 40 65 could it be done i am not sure of the barrel dimensions for the 40/65 but the bulets that you cast for the catridgr are .410 so i am asuming that the bore would be .400 or biger and a grove depth of .408,and there should be enuff meat in the chamber to take the 40/65 reamer am i correct. i think this would be a dam fine cartridge on the target model.

Maybe this will help....the 38-55 chamber is .029" longer than the .40-65.

The .40-70 would clean up the chamber, but then I think the brass may be problem, the .40-65 uses .45-70 brass. You could always go to .405 Winchester like I did, there are cast bullets for it!!
EDIT: Track has the brass!!!

Track also has the dies!! That was the biggest problem for loading an original .40-50 my friend gave to give me, I can make brass from .303 Brit, but I have yet to find dies for it so we can shoot it.

The chamber for the 40-65 and the larger dia required for the 40 cal bullets might just clean up the old 38-55 chamber. I think it bears a closer look.

talked to my gunsmith about the barrel rebore to 40/65 and reaming out the 38.55 chameber to 40/65 chamber he said he has areamer that he made 25 years ago that cuts the 38/55 nice and clean, he said if i had it done the ,75 of a millimeter is ok.he did one for a guy that is why he made the reamer the same length as the .38/55.he said that with a few reloads and fulllength resizeing the cases willstrech or i can get 45/90 cases and turn down the rim to the size of the 40/65 and just form them in the 40/65 dies and trim them to length.he said that is what the guy did 25 years ago he said that it shot a treat and the guy still has the gun it was done on a martini he is going to give the guy a call to tee up a meet for me so i can get all the info from the guy.i will keep you posted.

Dodd3.
Sorry but I have no input on all these old cartrdges. I buy what the gun smith said about the extra length of 38-55 chamber. Many chambers are cut long to allow for case stretch.

thanks fred and marv i think it is to. the onley prob is getting the 38/55 barrel rebored it has to be sent over to the east of oz the guy that does the rebores makes barrels aswell he made a octaganol 38/56 barrel for a friends malin lever action he does good work but onley button riffles his bores but the are deeper than normal may friends 38 /56 shoots lead bullets realy good . the cost for him to rebore the 38/55barrel is $295 pluss shipping both ways pluss the gun smith charge for the chamber job $150.he normaly charges $220 for a chamber job he always does a polish on the bore and chamber aswell he is a long time friend of 35 years, he has always done my work for a cheeper price, but he needs some work done on his house some new doors fitted and some windows fixed up. so we can work out a deal there. the onley draw back is it would take 6 to 7 months to get it to the shooting stage .it will probebly cost around $460 including shiping and isurence plus the cost of the 38/55 target $875.the gunsmith said he would leave it as a 38/55,so i told him about the tight chambers he said he has a reamer to fix that. it is a nice round the 38/55 but if any of you have shot the 40/65 the are an realy accuret round as well with a better bullet selection ,what do ya think.
