Do I have just an expensive noise maker?
« on: August 03, 2006, 07:08:45 AM »
Started honing the barrel of my new cannon after success in drilling the vent and found I don't have a seamless liner and I can see two half inch bright lines running the length of the tube( it does appear to have a 1/4 to 3/8 welded liner), what are the bright lines I'm seeing ? Everthing else looks good. I'm still working on trying to put pictures on so folks can see the progress. I'm a little depress about it's shooting ability with projectiles.

I've got to give the manufacturers a chance to respond to my email. Besides I think they are also a sponsor on Graybeards and I don't want to cause problems for me or the board. I knew they used a steel liner but I can't remember if I was specific in hearing that it was seamless. The plug on the breach looked good with a 100% weld penetration as well as the tube being centered but what are those shiny areas? It almost looks like another type of metal was welded in but I can't prove it.

Graybeard sponsors are only those listed in the very first post of the Cannon supplies list.

I have been assured that it has Sched 80 liner so with that, it's a go, those shiny areas disappeared when I honed it some more. I think it was simply some high spots that needed more attention. The breach plug looks good also I can see good weld penetration and it looks smooth( I'm also into astronomy and I 've got some great scopes). I have rolled the barrel ( which wasn't easy) an they did a good job on centering I didn't detect any movement. I still plan to remote firing it when it is done to make sure everything is as it should be. I'll try to post pictures of my progress.

Schedule 80 is pipe--welded pipe! It doesn't have the strength of tube, even welded tube. The pictures you sent me very clearly show a weleded seam. (do you want meto post those pictures for you.)

I know the company that you bought that barrel from and they have made a lot of cannons for a lot of years. If they would not provide me with a seamless liner I-me would not buy from them.

I would recommend you read my instructions in the welded seam liners post and follow then very very carefully for the life of your cannon.  I don't think you will ever have a problem.

DD, Your advice on periodic inspection and maintenance is sound (on welded steel liners post) and I do plan on incorporating that in my safety program both visual and dimensional.

It's all been said.

Schedule 80 is much stronger than lesser grades; BUT the issue of porosity of the weld negates that extra strength over time.

In the US Army Artillary, every round is LOGGED as to weight, type and powder charge.  When the tube gets close to it's life-expectancy, it is inspected more and more frequently.  At the very end (4000 full load equivalents) it is inspected after EVERY round.  This is at the muzzle where cracks frequently appear.  Charges 1 through 7 are fired.  Charge 7 is the full load; with a 4:1 ratio for anything under charge 7.

That's a little different than inspecting for damage from porosity, but it is a recognized procedure that works.
