Turkey hunting in Southeast Michigan.

Anybody know of any good spots? I've not been aroun here long (I live in Ypsilanti). Are public lands as scary during turkey season as they are during deer season?

Scarier cause yer not wearing any orange :shock:   I have hunted very little on public land and never for turkey so I can't say for sure.  I would think that there would be less people than during deer season because there are less hunters.

Try the Waterloo State GAme area in Grasslake. Also stateland in Brighton. You will have company though, garunteed!
I would look into private land. Lots of good turkey country in your neck of the woods.
I have a buddy in Whitmore LAke who comes over here to hunt. He has taken book birds the last three years. I do every year but haven't entered them. Its just not me. I have lots of birds around me, I even feed a big flock in my backyard every year. All I hunt is private proverty. Its a lot safer.

Another thing to consider is that you will have to apply for a public land permit.  There aren't a lot of them offered.  

Public land around here in MI is a little hit and miss.  Lots of yahoos out there.  I haven't hunted turkey on state land here, but I would guess it gets hit pretty hard.  The car parks on the state land I drive by on the way to work have been pretty busy this spring.  The thought of someone mistaking my calling and dekes for the real deal is too unnerving for me.

You're probably better off searching for some private land.  Most land owners are more likely to let you hunt turkey than deer.  Good luck!

I am in the Lansing area and have hunted state Land for many years.  I have found that the deer hunting "masses", do not hunt where I do anyway.  While they are wearing out their new boots and blasting at who knows what, I am down in some forsaken swail with a thermos and a lunch.  It's almost like the old Africa with the bush beaters, driving the game to you.

For turkey, it's a little different.  The license I get every year, is for private land.  And that's how I use it.  The same principal applies however, if you are hunting on state land.  If you are a good hunter and not a brush beater, there will always be that quiet spot for you to enjoy.  Just wear orange on the way to your hide and hang it in a tree, not flopping in the breeze, not too far from your blind.
