The 300RUM holds a bit more powder so I assume it kicks more than a 338wm(though Ive never shot the latter so I cant say first hand).

The 300 RUM has about 37 foot lbs shooting a 200gr bullet at 3015 fps.

The 338 shooting a 200gr bullet at 3000 fps has probably somewhere around the same maybe less.

Well, I have both guns, even though my 300 RUM is a remington 700 police (sucker weights like 9 lbs without scope), it still kicks like a son of a gun.
however, a 8.5-9 lbs rifle (including the scope) on my 338 win mag also kicks like a mule esspecially after 15-20 rounds at the range with 250 grain factory ammo.  Yes, they both hurt, and I'll explain it a bit better ~

Imagine being punched in the shoulder by 2 different people,
--one is a person who, say, can bench press 600 lbs (big slow moving arm, but hits with authority)
--other one is a person who is a professional boxer (not as strong as the 600lbs bench presser, HOWEVER, hits very very fast and hard)

thats the closest explanation I can come up with, the 300 RUM recoils sharp and fast as heck, and the 338 win mag shooting 250 grains also recoils hard but not as "fast" as the 300 RUM.  However they probebly both recoil between 35-40 lbs......In other words, its not a begginer rifle.

Just saw this today while looking on the Remington web site:

300 Win Mag     180gr     2960 fps     31.0 ft. lbs.

300 Wby Mag    180gr     3120 fps     38.4 ft. lbs.

300 Ultra Mag    180gr     3250 fps     46.3 ft. lbs.

This was listed in a Q&A section under "Support".

I realize you asked for a comparison between the 300 UM and 338.  I thought it interesting what Remington listed for their own cartridge.

Incidently, Chuck Hawks list's the .338 Win Mag as follows:

338 Win Mag      250gr    2700 fps     33.1 ft. lbs.

I shoot both the 300 RUM and the 338 RUM and have shot my buddys 338 Win. But the info you have is pretty accurate.

Except my 300 RUM recoils with the 180 going 3266 at 37 Ft LBs

I believe the numbers are close. Got to shoot the 338wm today and the recoil was noticablly LESS than my rem senderos in 7mmRUM and 300RUM.

Pleasantlly suprized, DM

Not only that, but I hear that elk and moose die better with a 338.  They drop a little faster, hit the ground a little harder.  Can't kill em any better than with that 338.

;)I have had both, the 338 Win. and the .300 ultra. I must admit I am a .30 mag. fan. To me the .338 kicked very hard when loaded to the hilt. I still shoot a .375 H & H, to me the .338 kicked more. The .300 did kick, but I used it for long range coyote shooting until one of my pals talked me out of it. It was a shooter. I think if I were building another super .30 I might shy away from the Ultra. The old stand-by's the Win. and Weatherby do all I need done. :-*With the .33's I felt if I am leaving the .30's then I want more bullet diameter and more lead. So I will stick with the .30's or the .375's 8)
