Trail Boss in .308 or 30-06
« on: August 10, 2006, 06:18:45 AM »
Noticed earlier thread on Trail Boss powder.  Curious if anyone has used it in .308 Win or 30-06 Springfield with 115 or 165 cast bullets?

Know it recommended for straight case brass, but IMR reloaders guide shows 6.5 grains of Trail Boss with 160 gr cast bullet in 30-30 Win.

I just checked IMR's on line guide and no data even in the 30-30 Win loading data for "trailboss"

http://www.imrpowder.com/data/rifle/index.php

But I did find this on IMR's Web site.

TRAIL BOSS
Trail Boss is designed specifically for low velocity lead bullet loads suitable for Cowboy Action shooting. It is primarily a pistol powder, but has some application in rifle. It is based on a whole new technology which allows very high loading density, good flow through powder measures, stability in severe temperature variation and most importantly, additional safety to the handloader.

Do not use this in .308 Win or 30-06 Springfield loadings!

Thank you for your reply, but I have a 2006 IMR Smokeless Power Reloader's Guide that I received from them early this week.  In it is load data for following rifle calibers:  25-35, 30-30, 32-40, 38-55, 40-65 Winchesters and the 45-70 Government.

In the IMR Long Range Rifle Section, for the 30-30 Winchester they show 6.5 grains of Trail Boss with a 160 grain cast lead flat nose bullet.

This section also says, "The loads listed below are representative of common calibers used.  As there are so many cartridges which could be used, only a few are shown.  DO NOT USE FILLER WITH THESE LOADS, as fillers can alter pressure and velocities decidedly.  Velocities were limited to aprox. 1600 F.P.S."

I called IMR at the phone # listed in the guide, inquiring about load data for .308 or 30-06.  I was told they had done nothing with developing loads for this ammo.  During the conversation, rep I spoke with at IMR never said NOT to use Trail Boss in these calibers.

Thanks again for trying to help me with your reply,  appreciate your concern for my safety!

The .30-30 data has been on the website for a while, you just have to look for it under the Trail Boss specific data for rifles.

Not trying to be contrary, just want to inform others reading the thread.
