What bullet weight for white tail deer?
« on: July 26, 2006, 05:12:19 PM »
What weight bullet would you use in a .50 cal huntsman for deer?  I think I would like to stay with as light as possible to keep recoil low and trajectory flat.  But I am new to this so input is appreciated.  What would you suggest?

The lightest bullet I have used in mine is the 200 grain Shockwave. I shot two deer with that bullet.

The first went through the front shoulder at 110 yards out the other shoulder and came to rest just under the hide on the far side. The deer went about 50 yards and fell over dead, the downside was there was no blood trail, the upside was I watched it go down.

The second was shot at a distance of 60 yards right behind the shoulder through the heart and lungs, complete pass through. The deer went about 60 yards, the downside was I didn't see it go down (too thick), the upside was the blood trail was 4-5 feet wide (no kidding) and a blind man could have found it.

Sure these light bullets worked, but I like saboted bullets in the 250-300 grain range. The 200 grain Shockwaves were propelled by 100 grains (volume) BlackMag'3 powder.

I hunted with a muzzleloader for the first time last year.  I have only used one bullet and charge but it worked very well in the Encore although it took a bit of muscle to load them.  I used the 250gr shockwave over 3 50gr Pyrodex pellets.  Very accurate it that rifle.  I shot a big doe at 75yds.  I hit the top of her lungs.  Nice big holes on both sides.  Might not have been the best blood trail being hit high but that wasn't a problem.  She didn't fall down she got slammed down.  I mostly bow hunt and wasn't used to see a deer drop like that.  It was most impresssive. :o

I have used the 240 grain XTP and two 50 grain pyrodex pellets with good success on mule deer but my go to bullet now is a 250 grain Shock-wave bullet.....
