Encore 12ga Slug Questions
« on: July 30, 2006, 06:27:52 AM »
I am putting my new Encore slug barrel together for the upcoming season. Any suggestions on slugs? I have two boxes of Winchester Supreme and I wanted to pick up some others to try? This will be my first year with the Encore so any suggestions would be appreciated...Thanks

This is my third season hunting with a 12 gauge slugger and I also use the Federal Premium, Barnes Expander Soild Copper, 2-3/4" , 3/4 oz slugs .  You don't need 3" mags and these are real heavy hitters with a MV of 1900 FPS.

What kind of accuracy is possible with the Encore slug barrel at 100 yards and more?

Slugs are getting low on power by 100 yards.  They are also dropping a bunch by then unless slugs are radically different than they used to be.

You need to look at all the rifled slug barreled slugs. They are producing some flat shooting slugs today. I know you may find this hard to believe, but I do have an eye witness, I made a 204 yards shot on a doe with Remington Solid copper's. She dropped in her tracks. My gun was sighted in 3 inch's high and I held the shot on the top of her back and the slug dropped into the heart. The new Hornady SST's and really flat shooting also.

The bad news is that the use of slugs has made deer hunting possible in fairly heavily populated areas in Southern Wisconsin.  Justification was that the slugs didn't travel very far, so it was safe.  I can see that coming under question.

I should have known that technology wasn't standing still.  I stand corrected.

I was with my pistol coach on Sunday and he tells me that the DNR here in Wisconsin is already looking at this.  It could make quite a change in hunting patterns...
