375 jdj ?
« on: August 20, 2006, 02:34:31 PM »
Hello all,

Well I am within 2 weeks of buying a few new barrels   30/30 for deer and blackbear and a 375 JDJ however I must admit I am a little worried about the recoil on the g2 23" 375 JDJ the biggest round I have ever shot before was a 7mm mag how does the recoil compare?  I am considering a muzzlebrake for it if it is a beast. I know it is louder but if it is to painfull to shoot then it does me no good.  also how hard is it to track down factor ammo for it?  I will not have my reloader back up and running for about another year.

thanks
Carl

Huntinhick I have a 375jdj barrel for my encore snd there really is not much recoil at all in my opinion. You said you have fired  a 7 mag before i would have to say there is more recoil in that 7 mag than in the 375. Don't bother with porting it is not necessary at all. :) :)

I have a Contender Carbine 375 JDJ barrel.  In comparing it to shooting a Marlin 30/30 I once had, I would say the recoil is no more.  It isn't something I would come close to wanting a brake for.

Factory ammo for it is available from Thompson/Center.

I have a G2 walnut with several barrels including a .375 JDJ. I dissagree with anyone comparing it to the 7mm mag and especially the 30-30.

It is not that bad, but does jump quite a bit. My cousin that shoots a .300 short mag, and several buddies that shoot standard weight bolt guns in 30-06 up to .300 win mag, including myself all feel it recoils more than any of our bolt guns.

My cousin that is 250lbs and very strong, got a scope imprint on his forehead and nose, it cut him really good. I have had bruises on the shoulder many times, before I installed a limbsaver recoil pad. The loads we were shooting are my reloads with the 260 grain nosler AB behind 48.5 grains of 4064. It prints under minute of angle at 100yrds. The factory 220 grain stuff is not that bad, but it is still quite snappy. The factory ammo shoots 3" groups at best in my gun, which is probably fine for brush hunting, but not good enough for what he cartridge is capable of.

My opinion, is get the barrel, but do not get a muzzle break. Install a limbsaver recoil pad (the Encore pad fits the G2 rifle stock) and make sure you have good eye relief on the scope you choose. It is a very accurate thumper of a cartridge. I love the power in a light weight carbine it offers. I mainly got it for a wild hog, bear, and hopefully moose(If I can ever draw a tag) cartridge, but it is so accurate that I am going to take a deer or two with it this year.

If you reload, you can load the heavier bullets for anything that north america has to offer and the lighter bullets for practice and deer. I have a practice load of 40 grains of H4895 and the sierra 200 gr flat nose that actually does feel just like a 30-30. It is very comfortable to shoot and is probably enough for deer. I have used the 200 sierra, 220 hornady flat point, 225 hornady spire point and the 260 Nosler AB, all shoot good, but the AB shoots most accurate. I still am not sure what bullet I will use on deer, but am still working on loads with the various bullets.

It is a great cartridge, but recoil definitely is more than most Contender rounds. Install the recoil pad and it shouldn't bother you a bit.

Good shooting,
Brian

Huntinhick,

I just bought a G2 Carbine in 30-30 myself, and have been mulling over the .375 for bear and elk (debating between that and a 45-70, or .444 IF the Contender can handle .444 pressure).  Haven't had the chance to even shoot the 30-30 yet, though, so buying a new barrel is a bit premature.

Those of you with experience with the .375 JDJ, what do you believe is the maximum reasonable range of the cartridge in a Carbine for use on elk/bear?  I would like to reach out to 250-300 yards ideally (otherwise I'd just get the 45-70), but if this isn't possible with a Contender, I'll stick with my Ruger M77 for the big stuff.

Regards,

Mike

hi guys ,
i have a factory  bbl and have been shooting it quite a bit, some older posts show i was a bit concerened about recoil and was asking about mercury reducers,

i find the 375 to be stout but not unpleasant, more of a push and the barrel does rise abit.

i live an hour away from foxridge and got some ammo there but basspro has it and incuding shipping it is cheaper if i add gas it is MUCH cheaper ;)

i have only shot out to 100m does any one have the max point blank range and how high to sight in @ 100?

i will hope fully shoot my firts big game with it in 2.5 weeks ( bear hunting in allagash maine)

go a head buy it ;D i think you will not be disappointed

regards dave

With the factory ammo, assuming it is going 2300FPS your trajectory would be best if sighted in dead on at 150 yrds.

50yds 1.1" high  100yds 1.7" high  150yds 0  200 yds 4.5" low  250yds 12.3" low 300 yds 24.3" low

The trajectory flattens quite a bit with spire points and more velocity.

Good shooting,
Brian
