New 17 HMR problems
« on: July 21, 2006, 07:14:51 PM »
I took out my new Handi Rifle 17 HMR today and had some problems. While firing both Remington and Hornady ammo I was getting failures to fire every few rounds. Most of the time I'd recock the hammer and pull the trigger again and the round would go off. On several occassions the second and third firing didn't work either. The ejected round showed  firing pin stikes and when I reinsertd the round it would fire. I'm thinking my hammer is hitting too lightly. Is it something I can fix or even attempt to fix or is back to NEF? Thanks for any thoughts.

Are you sure you are pulling the trigger full measure.

A full pull to the rear of the trigger is required to make the transfer bar work properly, if you release the trigger at the break, the transfer bar may not be in position for full impact to the firing pin. If you've cleaned it well as mentioned in the Centerfire FAQ and Help sticky which is SOP for any new NEF/H&R firearm, contact H&R and make arrangements to have them fix it on their dime including shipping, contact info is in the same FAQ. Several other members have had the same problem with Sportsters, suspect is the timing/function of the transfer bar. While it's there, you might ask them to lighten the trigger if that suits you and it's a good time to order extra barrels, too! ;)

I too have been experiencing fail to fire with my Sportster in HMR.  When I looked into the action from the top I saw the transfer bar fall as the hammer came forward even though the trigger was pulled tightly to the rear.  I took it to a gunsmith and he couldn't find anything wrong and said he test fired it as well.  I suppose he'll want money for his "effort".  What could be the cause of the transfer bar not staying up while the trigger is fully to the rear?

All the more reason to send it to H&R for repair, they'll fix it without a doubt, and not likely charge for it, and maybe even pickup the shipping tab! ;)

Well, it seems to shoot reliably but group sizes are still 2" for 17 grainers and 4" for 20 grainers at 100 yards.  Traded it off.

WOW...sorry for the inaccuracy!!! Most have been stellar accuracy!!  Both of mine are!!

When I got my HMR it also had the occ missfire. I sent it back to H&R when I had the M2 fitted and they fixed it right!!! No problems now.

I notice this is a month old post. Have you gotten it fixed?

Well, I took it back to my gunshop and he traded it out for another Handi. This one works like a charm.
