went looking for a handi but got something else
« on: August 23, 2006, 01:53:09 PM »
I went to my local Wal-Mart about two weeks ago and ask if they could order a handi in 280.They said yes 198 and change plus taxs. So I went Monday and looked in the order book and they showed no wood stocked 280 like I want..So I went to a local hardware store today who carries a few handis sometimes. Well as my luck has it niether did he but said he could order one. He wanted to show me a 223 and it was nice had a Simmons 3-9x40 scope. I think  the asking price was a little high  299.99 plus tax. Well as I was walking out I noticed a rifle in the case.It was one of the nicest rifle I have ever seen the wood looked like it come off a custom rifle. It was a 270 Savage with a Simmons scope and hard case for 450.00 and it did not take much talking to talk me into it. I told him I did not have that much cash on me and he told me they have Lay-Away  Well now i'm kinda in the same boat I was in when  I went there still no handi 280  but a nice 270. Now I got to come up with an excuse to my wife why I spent more than I said was and still looking for a 280 maybe she will understand( HA_HA) Oh yeah the price at Wal- Mart had change because they got a new order book.

You might have been looking for the H&R Ultra Hunter model, as it use to be availible in a 280 with a nice Laminated stock. But they stoped offering the 280 in that config.
You could have ordered in regular hardwood or sythtetic and switched the stock out to a Laminated one.
But any way Savage makes a good gun and they are great shooters. And you did no harm by changing over to the 270. The ballistics are very close, yet the 270 doesn't have quite as many bullet selections as the 7mm. But then again it really doesn't need them 8) Congrats on finding what you like.
