Unusual hen behavior.
« on: June 13, 2006, 06:44:18 AM »
I had some weird things happen this Spring season and wonder if any of you have experienced something simular.  I have hunted turkeys for quite a while now and never had birds do this before.

While scouting, and a couple of times during my hunts, there were hens flying up into trees in response to my calls.  I have never seen this behavior before, how about you?  I was gobbling preseason, in the late morning, trying for some shock gobble responses, instead there were several hens that flew up into some low tree branches and they yelped back.

One late AM I had a stubborn gobbler hang up and so I tried to motivate him with some of my own gobbles.  Shortly thereafter a hen flew up into a nearby tree and she went nuts calling.  Once this happend I let the hen finish calling the tom in and got him.

I have never seen or heard of hens doing this before, so thought I would query some of you guys here.  Note: I do not recommend using a gobble call unless one knows that there are no other hunters around.  This was done on private controlled access property.

i think the hens knew you weren't the real deal and they went to the safety of trees to roost while they assessed the danger and they yelped to call in a seeking response as we know that hens are usually looking to not be alone...unless they are nesting.  my guess is they just called the toms in to you and the hens couldnt pin point you but they knew you were not the real deal.
