i was wondering what would be a good all around  caliber. i have decided i would like to buy a lever action rifle for possible hunting larger game in the future and some plinking around any info would help in my decision thanks

All around, easy: Browning BLR .308 or 7-08.  Handles everything up through elk inside 300 yards.  Too much for plinking?  (Not really, now that there's Wolf .308)  That's why you also get a Henry lever, Marlin 39 or Winchester 9422.  Buy .22's by the carton, not the box!  Enjoy.

Have to agree with a BLR, if you want a modern lever action.  If you want a classic lever go with a Marlin in 30-30 or 35 Rem, or a Winchester.  If you need more power, look at a Marlin in 45-70.  If you are wanting a pistol cartridge to plink with, find either a Marlin or Rossi in 357 Mag.  Either of these should also do well with deer.  Then, of course, there are the 22's.  Henry, Marlin, Winchester, or Browning would all do well for plinking and small game.  Hope this helps and you enjoy the search!

it will help i am trying to decide was looking for a lever action rifle and caliber that would be good for deer and larger animals  if i ever get some place to hunt with a rifle  and may also buy lever action in 22 . is  the browning a top ejection or side ejection and do any of you have an idea of a good price for the browning,marlin,and henry rifles. probably a more classic style rifle  btw.

Levers are fine. It's just harder to get a "good" trigger on a lever over a bolt. Save some money for a "trigger job".  Also scopes, go with the ones like the Leupold Ultralights to save weight. A variable is no great advantage.

As a benchmark try to stay as close to the "Scout" criteria as you can which is an all up weight of 7 lbs unloaded.
