pistol barrels
« on: August 20, 2006, 04:06:29 PM »
I have become addicted to the single shot.  I have been shooting NEF handis for a while now and am considering a T/C.  I have noticed some of the pistol barrels in calibers that seem ridiculous to me out of a handgun.  Don't these barrels really knock you on your butt when you shoot?

How do you handle the recoil out of a pistol?

I think some of the calibers are ridiculous out of a handgun as well but many use them getting good accuracy so they apparently work.

You handle the recoil by hanging on.  For the heavier hitters, muzzel brakes help a lot.  When you compare "rifle" cartridges with "pistol" cartridges like the 500 S&W and the 460 S&W which are not considered ridiculous handgun cartridges, the recoil from the rifle cartridges isn't any worse.  My routine for my 460 S&W off the bench is a weight lifter's glove on my right hand (to keep the skin on my thumb), a cushion under my right elbow, ear plugs and ear muffs; with that preparation it's not too bad to shoot (some disagree).  Shooting off hand, the 460 S&W recoil isn't bad but the muzzel blast will clear the sinuses.

There have been clips floating around the internet of a guy shooting an Encore in 600 NE.  That is something I never want to try.

What he said! Make sure something is under your elbows. It'll hurt worse than road rash! I've seen guys use a modified two handed way of shooting also. The regular trigger hand works as normal ,the other hand holds onto the scope. I've tried this and it works pretty good.

My 357 Max and 7mm-08 are a joy to shoot.......my 45-70 gets serious, and my 460 S&W really gets my attention.........I usually shoot hot 45 Colts in it or 454 Casulls............65 with bad wrists too.........

I can understand the max and even the -08, but more than that, why not just get the rifle barrel.  This seems really hard on the body.  Doesn't it lose the fun at that point?  I don't really want a 45-70 in a rifle.

I know what you mean I had a friend who got a wild hair and bought a 15" 450 marlin barrel. Well actually he bought the whole pistol. Now I don't know who does the thinking at t/c. But I don't think they were useing their noodle the day they thought up this combo. And to make matters worst they put pretty wood gribs on it. You know the bright and shiney...........and slick ones. This is diffenitely not a caliber I feel should be in pistol form. Even though it has a muzzle break you better be ready.

I have an Encore in 308 winchester. It wears a Virgin Valley 16 /14 inch barrel and rifle forearm. It is a compact reach out there pistol and carries real nice on a sling riding my atv. Scope is a 2x7 T/C iluminated and I carry a shooting stick. recoil is easier than a 44 in a contender.
