Mold size for sizing
« on: August 21, 2006, 01:04:55 PM »
I plan on ordering a couple molds soon.  I currently don't cast and this will be my first step (I have already read your book, lapped and measured the cyl throats and barrel).  I would like to eventually get a Star sizer, but that may be a bit down the road.  What is your suggestion on mold size?  I know you suggest to order 1 thou over for use in Star sizers, but I don't plan on having one right away....but I will be using gaschecks, so I may have to get it anyways to put the gaschecks on???

Thanks

Gas checks MUST be crimped or they will bulge the case neck and can size it larger than the bullet, preventing any possible bullet pull.  -  I reccomend .001 larger than sizer diameter for Star sizers, to prevent any lubricant leakage if part of the bullet isn't in tight contact with the sizer die, because Star sizers apply extreme pressure to the lube, compared to the other sizers.

You didn't mention what kind of mold you'll be ordering, or desired performance level, but, if full power isn't important at first, most of my heavier bullets will shoot very will with gas checks left off, and especially so if I know you want to hand lube and shoot without checks.  I'll cut the check shank to minimum length for that purpose, which degrades maximum gas check velocity potential in rifles but doesn't hurt with handguns.  Or, I'll cut whatever number of cavities PB the rest GC, no extra charge.  i.e. One each if a two cavity mold, or your choice in a 4 cavity.  Stockpile the gc bullets and shoot only the PB bullets, handlubed, until you get $$$ for the Star.   Be sure to tell me this is your plan and I'll set the PB's up with bevel base.  When you get the sizer you'll have to size the BB base first for best performance, and the GC nose first, using an almost full diameter pusher punch to lay the checks down flat and square during sizeing.

email me personally if you want to work out any bugs about ordering etc, or need more personal information.
