Custom Barrel frustration--long post--need comments
« on: March 06, 2006, 04:08:38 PM »
So I order a custom barrel from a “well known” maker. I wait the 3 months and the barrel comes. I mount the barrel to my Contender frame and it has a on-half inch horizontal movement to it. (measured at the end of the 24” barrel)

So, I go over to my shootin buddies (my frame # is 147k his is 289K) and we hook it onto his Contender frame. Same amount of wiggle. Then we take his 18” custom barrel that was made by the same company (he bot it used off of ebay) and it locks up as tight as a tick on a dog on my frame----just as it does on his frame.

I call “famous barrel maker guy” and he says take out older barrel lugs (with roller lug) from one of my older barrels and put in new barrel. I do this and get the same wiggle. However, I install new lug in my old barrel and it actually locks up nice and tight, but the lock and unlock is much smoother than before.

“Famous maker guy” (FMG) says send barrel back. Also ask for my frame and promises not to touch in any fashion my frame. I worry, but my shootin buddy says “hey…what could he do”. So, I send barrel and frame back with written letter that is very specific and states “DON’T TOUCH MY FRAME”. Why???...’cause I don’t want to void the TC warranty.

I call FMG (every Monday for a month) and finally he says its everything but his barrel. I ask why it does the wiggle on my buddies frame…he blows this off. He says my frame is old and well worn. I tell him one month earlier I had it sent back to T\C and they just put in the easy open trigger (for free ‘cause the original was bad) and they found nothing else wrong. He tells me I filed or sanded the breach plug. I tell him I don’t even know what a T\C breach plug is! (That’s because I don’t). Then he tells me he removed my breach plug and put in one he had in his safe….from an old one he had in pieces….and he installed an old set of lugs and the barrel no longer has any vertical movement.

VERTICAL…I said it had horizontal movement. He said it still “had a little” horizontal movement, but that was because of my frame. Oh, then why do all of my other barrels work just fine? Why does one of his previous productions work fine? Why does this barrel wiggle in another frame. Is it just a Pennsylvania thing?

I told him to send me my frame…and put it back in the condition he sent it ( he was screaming at me at this point) and to keep his barrel. He stated he would not refund the money to me. I told him I didn’t care, just give me my frame back. Just don’t send me the barrel.

So….help me out here…..would you pay top dollar for a custom barrel that wiggles in your Contender frame? Would this be acceptable to you?

Any opinions?

Thanks.

Not acceptable, you need to list this person so others don't go through the same thing. Or tell him of your intension's and see if he will make it right. The Internet can be a very convincing tool.  :D

Redhawk,

That's my plan. But I'm still fumin. I had this phone call tonight and I have never been treated like this before.

What a bunch of horsesh*t this FMG was shovling at me.

At this point, my recourse is to persue it thru my credit card company. I didn't get what I was promised.

I am going to sleep on this tonight, tomorrow I will be a calm person, and I will attempt one more phone call. If it does't work I'll be more than happy to let you know who it is. And it's not like you don't know the name.

Dave.

Well,

I decided to call FMG this morning and give it one more try.

He and I both had slept on it, and too my surprise he stated that he had reconsidered and would not ship me the barrel, but would send back my frame in the orginal condition and include a check (cashiers) for the price of the barrel that I had already paid him.

All is well that ends well and everybody is entitled to have a bad day and make a rash decesion. He corrected his error and made a customer happy.

Dave.

SKB---Now, I dunno fer sure, but it could very well be the power of the internet that helped to get my issue resolved. It is true that I posted this grip on this and two other forms. Gun guys read forums and I think gun product makers read them too. However, I am a person of integrity (at least I think I am). So, this man did me right and I have no reason to trash his name. :D

Glad it worked out but
1. you still didn't end up with a barrel you wanted.
2. wasted 3 months waiting for it
3. could have ordered from others and got both
4. put a vendor in a real hurt.........these schmoos should realize we talk to each other all the time....there are but a few of us that purchase from this very specialized field and as a group we can crush them for poor service. Those who fail to realize this flounder in the biz and ultimately go away.

Yeah, I'm back to square 1 as far as a varmit barrel. It screws my timing up on my scope as well. I have a Leupold V-ii that I bot in the summer of 05 just for this gun (just spreadin the cash flow) and I wanted to shoot the gun, get the actual 300 yard and 400 yard bullet drop once I decided if I was going to use 45 gr or 55 gr bullets, then send the scope to Leupold to get the recite changed to the custom one.

Yeah..another $180 but it's what I want. If I knew they were gonna come out with the varmit plex in the V-iii, I would have waited.

So, I dunno what I'm gonna do. A TC custom takes 10 weeks....too long. One from the net....I don't think so. Standard TC, yeah...maybe.

But I just bot a Stevens 200 in 308. With my reloads it cloverleafs at 100 yards using 110 gr hornady. And it will hit the 12" gong at 400 yards consistenly. So, maybe a Stevens 200 in 223??? I dunno.. Less than $300 for a tack driver gun...I'll sleep on it.

I am really curious now as to FMG's identity.  Just two weeks ago I ordered a custom barrel which will take 3 months to get.

I must be lucky. I have spread it around a bit and have never had a issue.
The over all fit and finish from SSK is the best I have seen. Know it is not luck when you buy two 15" 460 mags at the same time and both shot sub 1" groups with just the same hint of a vertical group patteren.
keep your powder dry !!!

Okay 5.5 months later I have my 6.5x55 custom barrel.  At least it was here before hunting season.
But I must confess after shooting it....it was worth the wait.   Sub MOA from factory ammo.

Well, at least he has one customer left.  ::)

That is, unless he screws up something. Then of course, its your frames fault.

But I digress.

I do have, and did keep the BB stock and forearm. Good stuff and very happy with that. But then, it's not rocket science to work with a chunk of wood. ;D
