« on: July 25, 2006, 05:55:20 PM »
I have a remington 788 in 22 250 and i realy like this little gun it shoots real nice.and if you have one and like it you know what i am holding as my standard.they dont make them any more, or so i belive. I want a good hornet. That is what i went to the store fore 27 years ago when i bought the 22 250. good sales man a younger man with money in his pocket.they didnt have a hornet, but i sure ant complaining about what i went home with. but now i want that hornet too. thinking christmas time, gives me lots of time to find the right one.  from there web site the CZ looks good what are you 22 hornet fans shooting and what would you choose.

D.C.

My personal prefference would be an Anschutz,........... well made, good trigger, but more expensive than your locally made offerings. I've shot one, and have one in .222, and wouldn't part with it.
They're built on a beefed up rimfire action, and a full-sized solid, weighty rifle.

CZ, are always dependable, but don't know if I like the single set trigger that they are generally offered with.
I owned one with the double set triggers, good rifle,  but a little light in weight for my taste.

The Savage Model 40, with Accutrigger looks a good inexpensive offering, and a heavy barrel, and beavertail stock,
also on a beefed up rimfire 'sleeved' action,
and only available in single shot,

and if it don't work, you can send it back !
(There are a number of good reviews in the gun magazines, and on the net. Just do a search !)

cheers,

thank you for your input, that is what i will be doing, but i am not that good when it comes to using my computer, i did do a search on Anschutz yesterday after i read your reply. it is pretty and yes it looks spendy ,probaly out of my price range .but i am not going to rush this time and who knows it is a long time untill christmas if i actuly start saveing up now {and stick to the plan}it might not be.this itch got restarted a few months ago when i shoot a buddys honet it was a pistol barrel on a contender.it shoot ok but i would like a rifel. I posted first, then started reading all the posts in this forum, There is already a lot of good advise coming out of this forum, i am going to look into the savage as i have had one of there guns{22LR over a 20 ga} for 34 years it was my first gun. it has held up well. it has only one draw back it is a folding breech witch is fine but the ejector is spring accuated not mecanicle so some times reloaded shot shells stick. easy to avoid if you only reload clean bases.  the hornet has a bolt so this is not an issue. Made in the USA does have extra credit towards getting my money.thanks again for your input.

Don,

here's a couple Savage Model 40 reviews for you;

http://www.gunblast.com/Savage_Model40.htm

and;

http://www.fieldandstream.com/fieldstream/shooting/rifles/article/0,13199,1142129,00.html

http://www.savagearms.com/40Varmint.htm

You should be able to check one out in your local gunshop.

I've seen a Browning A-bolt, Micro Medallion Hornet hanging on the wall in my local gunshop, and it looks great. Wouldn't mind owning one myself.
A true front locking centrefire action,
but a more expensive option.
American Made ???? I think they eminate from Miroku of the Land of the Rising Sun !
That wouldn't bother me, though. I own a great little Weatherby Vanguard Varminter made by Howa.

cheers,

my statement of made in the USA has extra credit towards my money, is just that, extra credit, all other things being equal it would be a decideing point.but i will buy quality over where it came from. i read those aricles from the links and looked at the browning site. dang it is going to be hard to stick to the plan. but fate is helping that out a bit. on an impulse i swung by one of my favorite gun shops as it was only 5 or so miles out of my way. and they were closed for a two week vacation. i had looked at another place a few times they only had one gun in 22 hornet it  was used and looked pretty beatup. but now i have a few models to look at and see if i like the feel of.  thanks for the input and the links   D.C.

One more company that you might look at, T/C.  They have .22 H in  the Contender.  You can probably get one in the Encore from the custom shop also. 8)

If it were me I'd go with the CZ in a heartbeat. It would be the CZ 527 Full Stock model. Tom Purdom

I bought a new NEF 22 Hornet single shot last week and have already put 200 rounds through it.  It averages about moa 5 shot groups at 100.  If you add a laminate stock of which they have sevral colors, they are a nice looking rifle IMO and are made in the USA.  Supporting a local shop mine was $219.00  If or when I order a laminate stock it will be about 80 bucks.  They are .224 bore with a fast 1-12 twist.

I have a CZ Amrican 453 (set trigger) in 17hmr Burris combo.  They are nice rifles.  You could also get the wood upgrade but it's pricey.  The base American or Lux in a Hornet is about $490.00  They have a slow 1-16 original Hornet twist and I believe are the old .223 bore.  None the less they are said to shoot well.  They are made in Europe.

I looked over a Savage single shot Hornet (model 40.....I think?) very good.  They are a nice rifle too.  It was built more like a small bench rifle than a walking varmint rifle.  That is not what I was looking for in a Hornet.  At the local shop, it was nearly $400.00 (upper 3's).  I thought that was steep for the rifle.

For upper end I would go with the CZ over the Ruger personally.

I went the bargin route this time.  I could not be happier...........maybe I got lucky with it's accuracy?

Regards,
W.S.

your nef is it a folding breech? is the extractor positve push or is it a spring?
the 1-12 twist is interesting as the bullets i intend to shot are lyman 225415 and they come out of my mold at 53.5 g. a little faster twist might be a good thing. what wieght bullet were you shooting?

D.C.,

I suggest you look at the N.E.F. Centerfire forum here.  They are a very help helpful bunch.  Check or PM the gent whoms handle starts with the letter "Q".

I also prefer the fast twist because it expands (rpm) frags varmints bullets better IMO.  I was/am shooting 35 grain V-Max @ about 3100fps and 46 gr h.p. @ about 2690.  It shoots the 46 gr a little tighter at 100.  I use the v-max for woodchucks.

Though I have not changed the stock.  I was surprised with the availability of good looking laminates from NEF/Marlin.  Along with some very well figured, really nice after market Walnut stocks that one finish's themself and inlets.

Shooters have photos of both on that forum.

Regards,
W.S./Bill

I've got a CZ 527 FS in .223 and I LOVE it. The single set trigger is great just push it forward and it's light as a feather. If you haven't seen one here's a link to their web page.

Another vote for the CZ here.  I have a 527 American in 22 Hornet.  It is a sweet rifle.  Mine averages .4" 100yd groups.  Its preferred load is Hornady 40gr Vmax, 13.2gr Hodgdon's Lil' Gun, R-P case, WSR primer.  I also use the Lee Factory Crimp die, FWIW.  As far as the trigger goes, the set trigger is very nice for shooting off the bench @ 12oz.  The standard trigger on mine adjusted down to a creep free 36oz.  I think if you check around with the various forums, you will have a hard time finding negative comments about the CZ Hornet.  They just flat out shoot.  To me the box magazine extending below the stock is a non-issue, it just doesn't get in the way.  I don't want to knock anyone elses choices, but, I think if you check back on this and the other forums, you will find quite a few negative comments about the Ruger Hornets' accuracy.  Not to say there aren't exceptions, there are those that do shoot well. YMMV

thanks for all the replys, looks like a lot of trips to check out all the different guns, and how they fit. That is part of the fun. My list is getting longer instead of shorter. Not many gun shops in my area, So a few gun shop trips seem to be in order soon. Fit and feel my narrow the field some. thanks again for all the info. D.C. Don

Ah a chance to talk about my favorite subject, Hornets I own all of the above mentioned except the Anshutz Here is my opinion on them.
CZ 527: my favorite I love everything about it. I have the regular trigger set at 24 oz and the set at 12 its is a very light gun great for walking around and carrying. it throws up and feels better to me than others very well made and designed. one thing that kind of bugs me about CZ is the stock can either be show quality or awfull just depending on how they pick em.

Ruger 77: stainless varmint I really like the looks and feels nice. a medium weight gun fun to shoot but the least accurate of all my hornets I dont like the bolt. you can not push the hornet in this one. shoot them loaded light. I am selling it.

Browning: Looks very cool and feels pretty good a nice compact little gun I like it. It was my most expensive. I have had mixed results with Brownings in all calibers.

Savage 40: I bought this because it looked cool and was fairly cheap $360.whe I got it it was a P.O.S. every third shell stuck and it wasnt accurate and wouldnt load easily.  I called Savage and they didnt even let me finish complaing before offering to send a call tag to pick it up. 3 weeks later I got it back and I really like it now Its shoots very well. I havent had any sticky shells, and loading is still not great I use handloads and they are to long for the loading chamber but I shoot all my guns single shot and am carefull in loading so its not a big deal. For a Hornet this gun is very heavy and I wouldnt get it if your going to walk around with it. as a bench gun or shooting form a table at a dog town its a blast. If you want a heavy varmint gun thats not to expensive this one is great. look at one first because some are putt of by a barrel thats floated about 1/4" all the way around.

NEF Handi rifle fun little single shot break barrel. I got the super light with synthetic stock I keep it in my truck and dont care if it gets scratched. It hits what I aim it at if I dont choke. I wouldnt get it for my only gun but I'm glad I have it as a extra truck gun. It will occasionaly get ashel stuck and it you dont have a rod to stick down the barrel your done. this happened to me once when I take it away from my truck I carry a 4" peice of brass rod in my pocket to get the shells out.

No matter what you buy you'll probably love it cuz almost anything in a Hornet is better than almost anything else. These are just my opinions and not worth any more than anyone elses. You will find most people are passionate about hornets and love em or hate em. they are a quirky little round that takes a little extra love to hand load but in my opinion they are more than worth the extra effort. Sorry about spelling and grammer I spent too much of my time in school dreaming about hunting and not studying but I think you'll get the idea. However you go good luck and dont take it too seriously its all about having fun and the Hornet is deffinately a fun round.
