Moly coating & similar coatings
« on: August 27, 2006, 10:18:17 AM »
After a brief fling with moly-coated bullets in my .22-250 I gave them up a few years ago.  I guess my standard cleaning regimen wasn't the best for removing moly fouling; and, rather than invest in new solvents, etc., I stopped using them.  Wasn't making any difference accuracy and precision-wise anyway.

I have some other .224 caliber, coated bullets.  Have some Combined Technologies ballistic tips with a "lubalox" coating, and Barnes Varminator bullets with some kind of blue coating.  Are these OK to use without being left with some semi-permanent, crud lining my bore?

It is my understanding that both the aforementioned coatings are NOT moly and do not have the same characteristics that moly does  and therefore do not require the same level of rigorous cleaning to remove as does moly.
A call to Barnes can confirm this for  you re: the Varminator series.
They have always been very quick to respond to my questions in the past.
