BH aluminum backstrap and heavy loads....
« on: August 11, 2006, 10:47:42 AM »
I've been thinking of picking up a new Blackhawk in 45 Colt and I really like the feel and looks of the 5.5" barrel model. However, the backstrap is aluminum on this particular model and that kind of concerns me. My main purpose for the gun would be whitetail hunting and I'd be using heavy loads with 300gr+ bullets, which is where my concern comes from. I'm sure it's probably strong enough or I'd have heard of problems, but has anyone ever had any problems with the aluminum backstraps when regularly using heavy loads?

If it could end up being a problem, I may just settle for the stainless 4 5/8" model which has the steel backstrap.

Mine's lasted 30 years and is still going strong. Steel units are available as a replacement item if you ever have a problem (which is doubtful).

All blued Blakhawks have aluminum grip frames.  Only the SBH has steel.  I have never heard of it being a problem.

also if you think about it the grip frame is in your hand and how strong is that?  The cylinder would be the first to go

Bill Ruger once commented on the very same question.  He mentions that the grip frame is a low-stress part, and that aluminum was easier to work, kept prices down, and was completley safe to use.  Black Hawks and Vaqueros are stout little handguns that can take a LOT.  I don't think that you have anything to worry about.  Good Luck
