Spottedog:  There is 2 versions of the 581 one is called the sportsman slightly higher value, but here go 581 90 to 95% $100/$135 and the sportsman model  $125/$145 and they are decent shooters hope this helpes you decide. :D   JIM

I dont know the value but I do know that the 581 that a friend of mine bought would out shoot his 541 by a little and both shot a little better than my 541. For an example of how my gun shoots you can look below at the post "Good Day at the Range" if you like. If I remember correctly the 581 shot about 1/2" 50yd groups when it was "stock" he then D&T'ed the trigger housing and put in set screws to make the trigger adjustable. With the improved trigger pull it then out shot the two 541's. The only good thing about that is that he let his sister talk him out of it and so he doesn't have it any more.   Oh, and if any of you are wondering if both of his guns out shot mine not because of the gun but because he is a better shot than me   (He is)   He could not get as good of groups with my rifle as with his either.

Spotteddog:  You might try posting in the clasified section on the forum here and see if anyone has any to sell, also I usually look for old clips at the gunshows as I like the original equipment instead of aftermarket ones but the ones from tripple k are good mags for some of the older 22 rifles try them and see if they have what you need. :D   JIM

580 Series rifle are my favorite varmint .22's.  I have several 580's and 581's.  I don't have any 582's as I don't care for tube magazines. I try and find the single shot adapters and forget the magazines.

I use Millet scope rings and when they were still around I would use Tasco Mag IV 6x-24 AO Varmint scopes.  I used one of thes rifle to make a 245 yard, witnessed, laser measured shot on a Montana gopher.

I prefer the single shot set up as I can spend my time shooting gophers and not fumbling with and loading magazines.

I love my 581.  It was my first firearm (what a great Christmas).  I get consistent 3/8 inch 5 shot groups at 50 yards with mine shooting remington subsonic ammo.  You can get magazines on eBay quite often, also the sportsmans guide (http://www.sportsmansguide.com/).  I just checked and they have them for 10.97 5rd and 12.97 10 rd.  My only complaint about mine is that it is a little short for me, I need to either restock it or add a recoil pad to add length to the stock.
Happy shooting
Steve

Hey i love the 581. The step-brother of the 541. also 541 mags will work. Does anyone know where I canget a stock for a 581? I have a 540X (the single-shot target version) and want to stock it as a sporter. I did this with a Win. 75 target and it made one sweet squirrel gun. Unfortunetly I traded it.
